Wise County, VA is accepting applications for a full-time Building/Code Inspector position in the county Building & Zoning Department.
DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Building & Code Official, the position is responsible for performing skilled inspection work in enforcing compliance with regulations related to construction, design, and use of buildings, and ensuring that building codes, health and safety, construction standards and zoning ordinances are met and does related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of building construction materials, practices and methods of design, thorough knowledge of Boca Basic Building Code; ability to detect structural and other faults and to recommend their correction; ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints accurately, and to compare them with construction in process; ability to maintain effective working relationships with building owners and contractors; good physical condition.
Position requires at least 5 years of experience in building construction work with an emphasis on electrical, plumbing and carpentry or completion of a standard high school or vocational school course; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Employee must pass Basic Residential Building Inspector course and complete the DHCD Core Class within 12 months of appointment. Employee must obtain two or more certifications within 18 months of appointment.
