Position Summary:
The Executive Director of Social Services (EDSS) guides the Divisional Social Services department according to The Salvation Army’s mission. The Senior Director of Social Services acts as the second to the EDSS and will attend relevant meetings and make interim decisions in the absence of the EDSS.
The Executive Social Services Director reports to the Divisional Commander. This position also works closely with the General Secretary and Directors of other departments in order to ensure that Divisional services align with overall Divisional mission and strategy.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise Divisional social services staff – direct reports include the Senior Director of Social Services, the Emergency Shelter Program (ESP) Supervisor, and other supervisors and program staff as assigned.
- Manage department budget and finances, including the oversight of budgets related to EAS, ESP, and Pathway of Hope (POH) programs.
- Evaluate and provide support for Divisional social services programs to ensure effectiveness, compliance, and viability.
- Establish and communicate strategic priorities for Divisional social services.
- Maintain and share current knowledge of issues impacting social services best practices, changing demographics, and statewide priorities.
- Act as liaison between relevant Divisional personnel in order to ensure that residential facilities and corps/community center sites follow Divisional processes (e.g. with Metro Detroit Social Services Director for TSA shelter evaluations, etc).
- Maintain and improve relationship between The Salvation Army social services and the state of Michigan through appropriate advocacy channels.
- Represent The Salvation Army at an official level.
- Core member of Divisional Finance Board and other relevant committees.
Qualifications:
- Experience in both people management and project management, preferably with regard to social services/human services.
- Familiarity with Salvation Army policies and procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to build and maintain relationships.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Education and Experience:
- Masters’ Degree in Human Services Field from an accredited school; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- MSW or LMSW licensure (preferred)
- 5 years’ relevant experience
