Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking a Junior Environmental Engineer to provide office and field engineering for a variety of site investigation, remedial design and construction projects. Specifically, the role will involve working closely with our senior engineers, field staff and contractors to implement complex remediation projects. Projects can be both civil and process intensive. General responsibilities include providing office support to permitting, design, & project specification writing, procuring bids and managing field activities. Work could also include limited construction oversight, field investigation activities (soil boring and monitoring well installation) submittal & as-builts review, while adhering to the client’s SOPs, company standards, contract, and regulatory requirements.
The position will demand development of engineering work products subject to both client review and regulatory agency approval while working with senior engineers. The role will support numerous currently active projects from initial studies through the final stages of investigation and remediation, with frequent interface with Wood project teams supporting the work from our Pennsylvania and New Jersey offices.
The individual will report to a Senior or Principal Engineer and work closely with the Engineering & Construction lead and/or Project Manager for assigned projects.
Skills / Qualifications
- BS or MS in Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering or related field.
- 0-5 years of experience in civil or environmental engineering and project management.
- Office activities including engineering evaluations, cost evaluations, design support, preparation of bid documents and technical reports, submittal reviews, etc.
- Workload is expected to occur 60% in the office and 40% in the field.
- Strong work ethic and high degree of flexibility and patience to adjust to changing work priorities.
- Engineer In Training (EIT) certification is a plus but not required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Candidate may be required to work overtime hours in excess of 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week on a routine or as-needed basis. Overtime will be compensated.
- Must be a self-starter, self-reliant. Sufficient knowledge and experience to identify information needed for engineering and construction tasks, and complete tasks based on their experience and knowledge with assistance from internal senior level staff.
- Must be highly organized and capable of maintaining and interacting with large datasets and should be capable of transferring gathered data from field reports into maintained datasets.
- Experience or familiarity with a broad range of remediation technologies and solutions is preferred but not required. Technologies could include permeable and impermeable capping systems, thermal remediation, hydraulic barriers, groundwater extraction and treatment and other multi-phase physical removal methods and vapor and liquid phase process treatment techniques.
- An ability to understand and interpret groundwater contour maps, iso-concentration maps, and other environmental data visualizations is necessary. An ability to generate visualizations through software such as Surfer and Voxler, or the willingness to learn these applications, is preferred.
- Experience or familiarity with LNAPL and/or DNAPL identification, delineation, and remediation is a plus but not required.
- Field activities including data collection, evaluation and documentation.
- Limited construction oversight of subcontractors, as needed.
- Current sites are in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. Support to other Wood offices may require travel throughout these states and the greater northeast and may include overnight travel.
- Experience in MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint is necessary and desire to work with AutoCAD is preferred.
- Ability to obtain OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training is required.
- Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with Company’s driving (MVR) policy.
