Overview / Responsibilities
Wood is currently recruiting for Directional Driller. This a contractor position working within a Wood client's office. The Directional Driller will calculate and provide directional drilling instructions to rigs drilling for Client in North Dakota. Individual is responsible for following well plans according to Client policies and standard work guidelines. DD is required to contribute to and utilize automated. Driller Reports to the Drilling RTC & Innovation Manager located in Houston, TX. Individual will be expected to cross train and will be required to spend time working in all locations as schedule requires.
Location: 1501 McKinney Street, TX 77010
Work Schedule: This position will be rotational based in 3 different locations;
- 2 weeks Houston Office Days M-Th, F-Su Holidays remote in Houston Client Housing or contractor’s local residence. Then 2 weeks off
- 2 weeks Nights Remote at home, then 2 weeks off
- 2 weeks Variable Field Schedule as needed in North Dakota or for training, then 2 weeks off.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific to Day and Night Rotations:
Provide directional drilling instructions to the WSS/Driller/MWD/DD real-time during drilling operations to achieve the
desired well path and KPI’s set by Client. This includes:
- Calculating slide distance, tool face and motor yields
- Anti-collision monitoring
- Maintaining time breakdowns of communications and drilling activity
- Ensure that well plans are followed according to Client policies and Communicate progress to the Drilling Engineers, Real Time Center Supervisor, Drilling Supervisors
- When on rotation in Houston, TX, ND Field or remote will be working a 12 hr/day shift schedule
- Optimize drilling performance and directional parameters in consultation between the Client Real Time Center / Rig Drilling Supervisor / Driller / MWD
- Attend meetings – ability to address and discuss current operations / troubleshoot problems
- Maintain required documentation and records Specific to Field Rotation:
- Ability to effectively communicate with drillers on rig floor giving slide instructions while
- Ability to coach / train drillers to slide and bring them to a skill level of sliding un-assisted with instructions given by the real time center
- Inspect and Strap BHA components on location and provide complete BHA’s to Drilling Supervisor and Real Time Center
- Optimize drilling performance and directional parameters in consultation between the Client Real Time Center / Rig Drilling Supervisor / Driller / MWD
Skills / Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in any technical field
- 6 years of directional drilling experience
- Land rig experience desirable
- Experience steering extended reach horizontal wells utilizing bent mud motors
- A strong leader and team player; ability to work in cross functional organization (each DD involved in steering multiple rigs simultaneously)
- Good analytical and problem solving skills
- MS Office Suite experienced, excellent oral/written communication skills
- Strong computer skills required. (Operating multiple computers / programs and applications simultaneously)
- Proficient calculating anti-collision while drilling (separation factors, distances to nearby wellbores)
- Experience with directional drilling software such as Compass or Well Architect (Compass is preferred and currently utilized by Client
SCHEDULE / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have right to work in the US without need for visa sponsorship
- Work in Client Tower requires COVID vaccination or an approved medical or religious exemption
