What are the responsibilities and job description for the Music teacher position at Woodlawn School?
Woodlawn School is seeking an experienced music teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. Music teachers lay a foundation for a lifelong love of, and appreciation for music by introducing basic melodic and rhythmic concepts, instrument types and families, vocal posture and breathing, and numerous other topics and skills.
Full and / or part-time availability will be considered.
Performing Art professionals have the unique opportunity to collaborate with other team teachers to bring music and drama into history, technology, and other areas to provide further context and enhanced learning for students, through our project-based learning approach.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Further develops, implements, assesses, and modifies, as necessary, a dynamic music program that aligns with Woodlawn’s mission, vision, and values.
- Prepares and implements music lessons for grades PK 5th, including vocal instruction, training with classroom instruments, and general musicianship including theory, composition, and music history.
- Shares a passion for music instruction with middle and upper school students through an elective course offering each trimester
- Provides a variety of learning experiences so that students demonstrate skills and concepts learned through individual and group performances and a variety of communication mediums.
- Provides and supervises opportunities for students to demonstrate individually and in ensembles the skills and talents developed in the music program, bringing pride of accomplishment to students and the school.
- Engages students in differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs found in the classroom, managing, when appropriate, multiple instructional activities simultaneously.
- Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are age-appropriate music learning experiences.
- Leads instrumental ensembles.
- Directs and coordinates performances in school concerts, festivals, and community events.
- Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs for the school.
- Serves as the Musical Director for the annual Middle / Upper and Lower School Musical theater productions.
- Listens and responds to student and parent concerns in a responsible, constructive and resourceful manner.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment during class time.
- Communicate effectively with students and families about student progress and upcoming events and performances.
- Evaluates each student’s musical growth and performance on a regular basis. Remains engaged in school, department, and / or individual regular professional development opportunities.
- Fosters a joy and enthusiasm for music-making throughout the school.
- Promote both vocal and instrumental music among students, both in and out of school, and create extra-curricular music opportunities.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Music and / or Education.
- Minimum 2 3 years teaching experience (independent school preferred).
- Knowledge of a variety of music styles, repertoire, and teaching methodologies is necessary.
- Ability to play and teach guitar is preferred.
- Ability to play and teach piano / keyboard is preferred.
- Model and develop good vocal technique as appropriate for all ages.
- Ability to sing and play additional various musical instruments.
- Sufficient training and experience to provide the ability to teach age-appropriate music curriculum to a level consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in child development and educational practices.
