Summary: Woodmen Hills Metro District is a quasi-municipal corporation and political subdivision of the State of Colorado. Located east of Colorado Springs, in the Falcon region. The Aquatics Coordinator provides leadership to the administration and supervision of a comprehensive aquatics and safety portfolio that includes an indoor facility, outdoor pool, safety certification courses, swim lessons, and aquatics programming. This position provides leadership and development for short- and long-term objectives including strategic planning, budget development and management, policy and procedures, facility coordination, equipment purchasing, replacement planning, risk management, and program performance standards/evaluations.

Duties and responsibilities

Leadership & Program Management

  • Directs the development, financial management, facility, equipment needs, risk management, strategic planning, and assessment of the delivery of the department’s aquatics and safety programming.
  • Responsible for the supervision and daily operations of the Recreation Center East aquatics center and the Community Center West outdoor pool.
  • Manages all aspects of the aquatics and safety program, including but not limited to open recreation swim activities, learn to swim, water fitness, specialty aquatics offerings, youth and community aquatics programs, pool parties, and safety certification classes.
  • Direct, design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive high-quality aquatics recreation program that meets the needs of the Woodmen Hills Metro District community. These programs should provide a positive experience focused on healthy behaviors and well-being.
  • Coordinates in developing, planning, administering, and implementing revenue-generating aquatics events and programs. Work collaboratively with other members of the Parks and Recreation Department and District staff to conduct special events and programs for the Woodmen Hills community.
  • Instruct American Red Heart safety and training classes to staff and community members. These classes include Community 1st Aid/CPR/AED, Lifeguard Training, and Babysitting Training.
  • Administer and maintain recreational management software (ActiveNet) that supports aquatic and safety program and event registrations, product sales, and swim lessons.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, mentor, schedule, assign responsibilities, and evaluate part time employees including lifeguards, safety instructors, swim instructors, and outdoor pool attendants.
  • Complete annual evaluations and present coaching and development opportunities throughout the evaluation period to direct reports.
  • Coordinate, implement, and evaluate employee outcome-based trainings, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Prepare, review, and submit human resource documents.
  • Manage payroll for direct reports and maintain payroll records.

Fiscal & Resource Management

  • Assist in the development, implementation, management, reporting, and evaluation of program budget including but not limited to payroll and operations.
  • Manage and maintain budget in accordance with department and District guidelines and policies.
  • Reconcile expenditures and ensure prudent stewardship of resources.
  • Ensure that business functions employ best management practices and are consistent with department and District standards.
  • Provide oversight and coordinated use of aquatic and safety equipment including purchasing, organization, inventory, security, and maintenance Work collaboratively with leadership staff to regularly assess appropriate fee structures.
  • Provide short and long-range planning and fiscal management related to aquatics and safety program administration and aquatic facility operations.
  • Recommend operating and capital reserves projects/purchases by providing research and assessment relevant to area needs and product availability.
  • Coordinate contracted facility services and supplies such as swimming pool chemicals and facility maintenance.

Risk Management

  • When emergency situations arise, serve as a first responder, utilize necessary communication, and provide care in accordance with certification perimeters.
  • Recommend policies and procedures that protect the health and safety of our guests.
  • Collaborate with department staff and external partners on decisions related to healthy and safe conditions at Parks and Recreation Department facilities.
  • Assist with pool operations including water and air quality, chemical feeders, filtration, documentation, and state inspections.
  • Ensure that the aquatics center complies with state health code standards and are prepared for inspections.
  • Maintain current records of aquatics and first aid safety equipment as it relates to mandated safety replacements.
  • Assist with the review and management of incident, accidents/injury, and save reports.
  • Serve as the department liaison with ARC, El Paso County Public Health, and other areas that are relevant to the management of safe water practices in public recreation.
  • Coordinate aquatics program safety audits.
  • Lead department Risk Management Committee.
  • Facilitate and maintain emergency policies and procedures for aquatics and safety programs and facilities.
  • Collaborate with and assist the facilities operations staff in coordinating operational hours, aquatics facility maintenance closures, and facility and program reservations and access.

Promotions and Marketing

  • In collaboration with the department leadership team, advertise and promote aquatic and safety facility operations, programs, access, and any disruptions to access.
  • Review aquatic and safety website information and marketing materials for updated and accurate content.
  • Collaborate with the department leadership team in researching and recommending marketing and promotional strategies to promote aquatic and safety programs, service, and events.
  • Ensure marketing materials, messaging, and digital platforms are consistent with department and District marketing policies and guidelines.

Administrative Duties

  • Responsible for monitoring, compiling, organizing, and analyzing aquatic and safety data collection and reporting, including but not limited to, outcome-based strategies, assessment plans, and annual reports. Accountable for the identification, development, application, and evaluation of guidelines, policies, and procedures related to aquatic and safety operations in according with industry standards, department, and District guidelines.
  • Regularly review and update aquatic and safety operations handbooks and manuals.
  • Serve on assigned departmental and District committees to support the mission, vision, and core values of the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that support the mission, vision, and core values of Parks and Recreation and the Woodmen Hills Metro District.
  • Attend professional development conferences, workshops, and seminars, and advocate for professional development throughout the department to stay abreast of current trends and industry standards.
  • Participate proactively in departmental, and District events.
  • Participate in the development of ideas and suggestions for program, facility, and service improvements.
  • This position is required to regularly attend aquatics classes and/or programs and use the various facilities and equipment periodically to ensure that they are meeting or exceeding department and industry standards and risk management guidelines.

  • Demonstrated experience in providing professional and excellent customer service to diverse user groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in aquatics facility operations and programming.
  • Demonstrated experience in risk management and policy development.
  • Demonstrated experience in American Red Cross or American Heart Association safety and training certification classes.
  • Demonstrated experience working with budgets.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national trends and best practices in recreation aquatics facility and program management.

Physical Requirements:

  • Required to sit, stand, climb, jump, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Must also be able to project voice over aquatics area noise so that the participants are able to hear.
  • Work will be performed primarily inside and seasonally outside.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience
  • 3 years of demonstrated experience in aquatics and safety management; or, 1 year of post-secondary education or formal training and 1 year of demonstrated experience in aquatics and safety management.
  • Certification Requirements
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguarding and Professional Rescuer.

Preferred Qualification

  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) certification.
  • Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT) certification.
  • Red Cross Community 1st Aid, CPR/AED Instructor.
  • Certified Pool Operator or AFO.

Work Schedule

Typical work schedule will be:

  • Tuesday – Friday 10:00 am – 6:30 pm.
  • Saturday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
  • Sunday & Monday Off
  • This position will be required to work some weekends, evenings, and early morning hours to support staff and programming.

Background Check

Applicants over 18 years of age, must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

Compensation

  • Full Pay Range, $43,500 - $58,000
  • Hiring Range, $43,500 - $48,500, based on qualifications, knowledge, and experience.
  • Annual performance-based raises will be issued at the District’s and Department’s discretion.
