The Worcester Public Schools is seeking a School Culture and Climate Assistant. This position will assist in the development of a positive school culture and ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors; build good relationships; and support the enforcement of school rules, regulations, and procedures. The School Culture and Climate Assistant reports to the building principal. This position will be responsible for having a presence throughout the school building and grounds to maintain a safe school community.

This position will require an extensive amount of walking and running when necessary. It will also require the use of verbal de-escalation and physical intervention when warranted. The successful candidate will be able to be a positive, supportive, and visible member of the school community who is also able and willing to engage with students, staff, and visitors when necessary to ensure a safe learning environment.People who speak a second language, particularly Arabic or Portuguese, are encouraged to apply.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Monitor assigned portions of campus and/or parking lot before and during school hours.2.

Operate a two-way radio and report incidents.3. Respond to radio summons.4. Maintain a highly visible presence to maintain order and encourage positive conduct.5. Identify potential issues and work to maintain control in a respectful culturally responsivemanner.

6. Attend extracurricular events such as dances, athletic events, drama productions, and other events tomaintain order and encourage positive behavior.7. Observe and report any damage to school property.8. Provide clear and concise verbal reports of incidents.9.

Open and close campus gates, lockers, and classrooms as needed10. Answer questions and direct visitors.11. Enforce school regulations including, but not limited to, smoking, truancy, tardiness, and vandalism.12. Participate in discussions about building safety13.

Utilize Crisis Prevention Intervention techniques when necessary to contain persons involved in fights or physical altercations14. Attend and participate in trainings and meetings led by the Positive Youth Development Manager15. Performs job related duties as assigned.EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Ability and willingness to successfully complete training and effectively and appropriately apply skills and knowledge learned in training.2.

Ability to effectively and appropriately communicate in English in writing (word usage, grammar, and punctuation)3. Ability to learn and enforce rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.4. Ability to learn to recognize potentially dangerous situations and respond appropriately5. Ability and willingness to pursue, apprehend and restrain persons if needed.6.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing7. Ability to analyze situations, exercise sound judgment, and adopt effective courses of action.8. Ability to remember details such as faces, names, and incidents.9. Ability to learn the operation of communication devices and other job- related equipment.10.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in the workplace (staff, students, families, visitors).11. Ability and willingness to perform duties involving occasional running and climbing and considerable walking.12. Ability and willingness to perform duties involving prolonged exposure to weather conditions.QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school graduation or the equivalent.2.

Experience working with middle and high school aged students is preferred.3. Current American Red Cross CPR and CPI certificates are required. Successful applicants who do not currently have CPR and CPI certifications will be provided training. Completion of the training is a condition of employment.COMPENSATION, WORK DAY, AND WORK YEAR are in accordance with the Instructional Assistant collective bargaining agreement.

As of the development of this position, the work year consists of 180 pupil days plus 3 professional development days. The work day consists of the student day plus 30 minutes. Compensation is based upon education and experience and paid according to a negotiated step scale. This position includes paid sick and personal days in accordance with the Instructional Assistant collective bargaining agreement.
