OFFICIAL TITLE: Staff Assistant, Residential Area Coordinator
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Graduate/ Undergraduate Assistant, Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, and student staff.

General Statement of Duties: The Staff Assistant, Residential Area Coordinator will provide students with a safe and comfortable living environment on campus. They will advise, support and guide students and leaders to help them grow and develop through one-on-one interactions, programs, educational outreach, supervision and advising. The incumbent will work collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, and community members to build a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. They will also perform administrative duties within the department and throughout campus. This person will supervise a Graduate/Undergraduate Assistant and work to manage two upper class residential areas. The Area Coordinator will supervise and manage the desk assistant staff as well as their payroll. This person will live on campus.

Responsibilities:

  • (E) Responsible for the oversight of approximately 800 resident students in a residential building(s).
  • (E) Supervises, trains, and manages a staff of 22 Resident Assistants.
  • (E) Responsible for evaluating Resident Assistant performance in the assigned area and providing recommendations for the annual rehire process.
  • (E) Supervises, trains, and manages a staff of 50 Desk Assistants.
  • (E) Responsible for the planning, organization, direction and budgeting of all resident student programming within the assigned residence hall(s).
  • (E) Holds regular weekly office hours in building and attends Resident Assistant programs in order to be available and accessible to resident students.
  • (E) Becomes acquainted with residents to facilitate referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments.
  • (E) Demonstrates multicultural competence, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
  • (E) Acts as a student conduct hearing officer for the residence halls.
  • (E) Facilitates conflict resolution between resident students.
  • (E) Responds to emergency situations as needed.
  • (E) Supports the security of the residence halls and works to teach students personal responsibility within the residence halls.
  • (E) Responsible for reporting daily repairs to custodial/maintenance staff through SchoolDude.
  • (E) Works to ensure the proper opening and closing of all residence hall facilities, room assignments, maintenance and residence hall orientation.
  • (E) Responsible for overseeing the damage billing process in their assigned area each semester.
  • (E) Participates in the on-site hosting of the summer conference programs.
  • (E) Provides written reports and summaries as requested by the Director, Associate Director, and Assistant Directors of Residence Life and Housing.
  • (E) Participates in a rotating, on-call weekend, and evening duty system, including all holidays and breaks.
  • (E) Maintains on campus presence a minimum of two weekends per month.
  • (E) Serves as the Residence Life on-call access manager while participating in a rotating, on-call weekend and evening duty system.
  • (E) Serves on various departmental and university committees, as approved by the supervisor.
  • (E) Assists with departmental processes such as Staff Selection, RA Development and Evaluation, Room Selection, Desk Assistants, etc.
  • (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students.
  • (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
  • (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.

Job Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated previous supervisory and administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with education, cultural and recreational programming.
  • Demonstrated experience with staff training theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion, especially pertaining to issues in higher education, and an understanding of college student engagement and creating learning outcomes.
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflicts and crises.
  • Demonstrated awareness/sensitivity toward issues pertaining to Affirmative Action and nondiscrimination.
  • Ability to reside on-campus full-time.
  • Ability to successfully pass a thorough background check and CORI check.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.
  • At least one year of post-baccalaureate experience as a live-in staff member.

Additional Information:


This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, APA, professional position. Duties are performed on-campus, within mostly traditional business hours and occasional evening or weekend hours for special events. The starting annual salary for this position is $44,500 with a bachelor's degree and $46,000 with a master's degree (compensation includes housing, meal plan, and laundry facilities).
