The Finance Manager will ensure that Working Landscapes has the systems and resources to expertly manage and scale up our healthy food, healthy community and healthy soil programs.  This includes leading and implementing the organization’s financial strategy, streamlining processes, ongoing monitoring of organizational health indicators, and providing leadership and oversight for social enterprise initiatives. We are also designing new approaches for subsidizing local food purchases and healthy soil investments; you will help us to design and implement innovative programs such as these.  Strong project management, organizational and interpersonal skills are absolutely necessary.  Must be a collaborative, team-oriented leader, and value working for an organization devoted to the public good.  

This position reports to the Executive Director and will serve as part of our leadership team.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage, monitor and communicate the financial performance of the organization
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date financial records, income and expense, accounts payable and receivable, income and expense reports, grant budget reports, bank reconciliations, balance sheets, cash flow statements
  • Monitor actual financial transactions against budgets, quickly identify discrepancies, and present and execute strategies for addressing them
  • Maintain grant reporting calendars, produce required financial reports, and enter those reports into grant management systems. Serve as manager for the completion of narrative grant reports, organizing and compiling information from team members and collaborators; upload narrative reports as well.  
  • In collaboration with the Food Hub Manager, ensure that hub revenues and expenses are properly documented and tracked; ensure that accounts receivable and payable are managed. Develop and manage seamless, efficient ways to pay and be paid.  
  • Play a leadership role as we scale our food hub operations and aim for financial viability.
  • Lead the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts, with Executive Director and Board finance Committee; interface with the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors 
  • Manage relationships with external firms who provide financial services, including auditor.  Ensure accurate and timely completion of the yearly tax return, sales tax, charitable solicitation license renewal, and other required reports
  • Develop processes and manage payments for farmers and partners enrolled in a new grant program, which will distribute more than $2 million in the next five years, in collaboration with partners across the state.
  • Lead documentation, synthesis and reporting on non-financial metrics related to the programs of the organization, including value-chain connections, social benefit and environmental metrics.  Work collaboratively to transform such data into useful and compelling information, both internally and externally.  

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated track record of timely and accurate application of nonprofit bookkeeping principles and best practices, grant accounting and compliance with regulations
  • Expertise in QuickBooks Online and Excel
  • Experience accurately completing financial grant reports
  • Ability to think analytically, listen carefully and communicate professionally and clearly 
  • Willingness to take ownership of and solve problems that are within the scope of this position; willingness to admit errors, discuss challenges and learn as part of a team.
  • Ability to work and make decisions under pressure; ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, evolving setting.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Expertise in federal grant management and reporting.  
  • Experience with school nutrition programs or other institutional food programs. 
  • Ability to hold the big picture context, the day-to-day details, and the underlying values that guide our work all at once.  
  • Coding experience so you can develop custom spreadsheets or tracking systems
  • Experience summarizing complex information from a variety of sources, including surveys, research articles, or geospatial analysis
