Overview

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, seeks a Arctic Fishery Officer

In coordination with the Managing Director, the Arctic Fishery Officer develops and implements the WWF-US Arctic Program fishery engagement strategy for Central Arctic and North Pacific fisheries. Works with the Global Arctic Programme and represents WWF-US at local, regional, national, and international fisheries forums and processes relevant to the Arctic. Engages and partners with US Oceans Team fishery projects. They also work closely with the Managing Director to ensure conservation programs operate efficiently and effectively, including developing fundraising strategies and proposals. Works closely with the Managing Director to establish annual program goals and with individual team members to establish and track performance. Manages and supervises programmatic staff.

Responsibilities

• With a talented team of highly motivated individuals, implements the US-Arctic strategic framework consistent with the WWF-US Oceans Team seascape strategy.
• Develops, plans, and implements components of new and ongoing projects and grants. Works with project personnel, grantees, consultants, and other goal team staff to facilitate coordination, communications, and regulatory reporting for current and new projects.
• Works directly with program and project staff to facilitate the application of precautionary approaches to developing Central Arctic Ocean fisheries management structures and regimes. May represent WWF as an observer at Central Arctic Ocean Fishery Agreement meetings.
• Develops the WWF-US Arctic Program domestic fishery engagement strategy and goals with the help of the Managing Director. Promotes ecosystem-based management concepts into commercial fishery management and harvest practices.
• Identify and develop unique strategies to address conservation problems and improve fishery management in the North Pacific.
• Facilitates the development of short- and long-term work plans, reports, and communications materials for team projects.
• Assist the Managing Director in the day-to-day operations of the US Arctic Program.
• Manage and supervise Programmatic staff.
• Identify and secure funding for the US Arctic Program with the help of the Managing Director and US Development Team.
• Prepare funding proposals, develop grant agreements, and prepare program reports.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• 6 years of fishery management or other resource management experience or 3 years of experience with an advanced fisheries policy, marine biology, or similar field degree.
• Experience working with Indigenous or minority communities is desired.
• Ability to think strategically and synthesize and incorporate input from a variety of stakeholders, collaborators, and other staff.
• Proactive, self-motivated individual who works well within and team and has demonstrated the ability to work autonomously.
• Excellent communication skills with multiple audiences. Demonstrated effective public speaking and the ability to communicate complex issues verbally and in written form.
• Ability to set priorities, manage multiple details simultaneously, and facilitate the work of others.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% as necessary.
