The Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for providing day-to-day support for manufacturing operations, while implementing cost reduction efforts and supporting continuous efficiency improvement initiatives utilizing Lean concepts and tools. The Manufacturing Engineer will support production personnel with training, tools, fixtures and troubleshooting various product-lines as necessary. This position will develop innovative manufacturing concepts, create robust, customized mechanical, semi-automated and automated production machinery to support the concept, design all necessary parts, and specify the necessary commercial components. 

The ideal candidate for this position is an innovative thinker and has a passion for operational excellence. Work is both independent and collaborative in nature therefore the candidate must be a self-starter, creative, innovative and able to work independently or as a member of a multi-faceted team while acting with professionalism and able to clearly communicate, with good time-management skills, and the able to prioritize work between multiple projects.

Responsibilities and essential duties: 

  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing operations by becoming a subject matter expert in select areas of the production facility. 
  • Conceptualize, design, implement and debug equipment with an emphasis on developing systems that simplify complex processes, are cost-effective, efficient, robust, reliable, maintainable, and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Utilize Lean concepts and techniques to optimize overall manufacturing system performance by providing innovative, common-sense solutions that reduce manufacturing costs and streamline production.
  • Work on shop floor to promptly resolve production issues, troubleshoot mechanical and control system issues and to proactively identify improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with industry safety, design standards and guidelines. 
  • Lead projects from assignment through completion while managing outside vendor(s), assembly, verification, calibration and maintenance as required. 
  • Follow all health and safety protocols, standard operating procedures (SOP’s), environmental health and safety requirements.
  • Prepare CAD part models, assembly and detailed drawings utilizing Solidworks within industry drafting standards and by applying GD&T, appropriate tolerances, finishes and manufacturing processes to create parts and assemblies in a timely and cost-effective manner.


Education & experience requirements:

  • BS/MS Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent, e.g. Majors in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.)
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience as a hands-on Manufacturing Engineer or Mechanical Engineer designing and working with automated production equipment in an industrial environment.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing implementation in a manufacturing environment, using structured problem solving for process improvement and waste reduction.
  • Experience with the selection, sizing and integration of motors, drives, encoders, load cells, inspection cameras, pneumatics, sensors, etc. into new or existing mechanisms, in an industrial setting.
  • Experience with cam actuated mechanisms is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience building prototype tooling, test fixtures and programming in process development lab to prove feasibility of complex/high-risk processes prior to final design is a plus.
  • Must be skilled in Solidworks and be able to generate designs, parts, assemblies, detailed drawings, and bill of materials to industry standards
  • Able to troubleshoot and program PLC’s using IEC 61131-3 architecture and languages such as Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams. (Wago, ABB, Bosch-Rexroth). 
  • Able to create and document mechanical designs utilizing Solidworks, including detailed technical drawings to ANSIY14.3 standards, schematics and bill of materials for equipment sub-assemblies, and parts. Knowledge of GD&T is a plus.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to applicable safety standards (ANSI, OSHA, NFPA) 
  • Perform engineering calculations with respect to tolerance stack-up, tolerance selection, strength of materials, beam deflection, rotational and linear speed, force, torque, etc.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a creative, detailed, while commonsense approach to applying to solve difficult problems.
  • Must be a self-starter, innovative and able to work independently or as a member of a multi-faceted team.
  • Good time-management skills, able to prioritize work between multiple projects.
  • Project management experience is a plus. 


Physical Environment and Working Conditions 

  • Must have the physical ability to understand and communicate effectively in person and via telephone, and email.
  • Must be able to frequently interact with employees in a factory environment, where high speed machinery, chemicals, forklifts and manufacturing equipment are used. 
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time when working in manufacturing areas of Company 10% to 50% of the day depending upon projects.
  • Must have mobility needed to occasionally access the entire facility (roof, crawl spaces, decks)
  • Must be able to sit at a PC 90% to 50% of day depending upon engineering projects.  
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, lift, twist, stoop and raise arms above head to work on engineering projects.
