WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Assistant Water Resources Engineer for our Virginia Beach, VA office. Be involved in projects with our Virginia Water Resources Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.
Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the analysis, development, and design of processes and infrastructure relating to water supply, stormwater facilities, irrigation facilities, culverts, hydrology, open channel hydraulics, bridge hydraulics, floodplain modeling/mapping, hydrologic/hydraulic modeling, river/stream/habitat restoration and fish passage, pollution control and treatment, and preserving the quality of the environment by averting the contamination and degradation of water resources. Generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.
Your Impact
- Assist senior engineers in the development of a wide variety of water resource design, assessment, planning and monitoring projects.
- Perform water/wastewater, stormwater management, drainage, erosion sediment control design analyses including performing calculations under the guidance of senior engineers and determining basic design requirements for new development, environmental restoration, and transportation projects.
- Utilize CADD and GIS tools to determine drainage areas and other hydrologic components in support of H&H analyses. Have a basic understanding of hydraulic modeling and the ability to learn WIN TR-55, WIN TR-20, HEC-RAS and other modeling software in support of design projects.
- Be a part of a team preparing quality bidding construction documents and overseeing construction of flood protection infrastructure.
- Prepare technical reports under the guidance of senior engineers summarizing analysis and project requirements, including how design approach addresses project requirements. Prepare complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and software.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, with a focus in Water Resources, or closely related discipline.
- Engineer in Training Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Knowledge of the following, with the ability to learn from others:
- CADD production and civil design software skills (MicroStation, AutoCAD, Geopak, InRoads/PowerRoads/OpenRoads, Civil 3D)
- Maryland drainage, water/wastewater, and stormwater management design criteria and regulations
- H&H analysis using WinTR-55, WinTR-20, HY-8 and similar programs
- Knowledge of GIS software and applications (e.g., Arc GIS, GISHydro, etc.).
- Self-starter with strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
- Master's Degree in the above-referenced discipline.
- Affiliations with student organizations and professional societies and active community involvement are highly desirable.
