What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab Clerk position at WVU Medicine?
Obtain and process laboratory specimens for testing. Provide clerical and receptionist services to the laboratory.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:
1. Experience using a Laboratory Information System.
2. General clerical experience.

1. Perform computer related duties such as ensure proper patient identification, test order entry, documentation of specimen collection, proper specimen labeling, and receipt using the LIS. Prints, sorts, and distributes patient test reports according to laboratory schedule. Performs additional computer tasks for statistical data entry using a variety of other computer program. Submit information for the update of physician database and statistical files.
2. Answer and respond to telephone inquiries, directing physician/patient questions to personnel, as appropriate. Calls critical laboratory results to physicians. Faxes results to ordering provider as indicated. Re-Fax EPIC failed faxes printing to the lab daily.
4. Direct patients' requests to appropriate personnel. Assists patient with requests for reports according to HIPAA guidelines.
5. Prepare testing to be sent to reference laboratories. This includes, but not limited to, proper collection container, specimen type, specimen temperature, specimen stability, etc. Ensure that pending lists are maintained accounting for all patient samples. Can properly pack and ship specimens to all referral laboratories.
6. Receive specimens from pneumatic tube system. Documentation of specimen collection and receipt using the LIS. Centrifuge specimens as needed. Aliquot specimens as needed. Deliver prepared specimens to indicated departments.
7. Maintain & update departmental files including preparations of reports and special requisitions.
8. Maintain department equipment including recording & reporting malfunctions.
9. Monitor supplies, stock shelves when orders arrive, fill client orders.
10. Sort & distribute mail daily.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
