YBLA seeks Leadership Coach for Black Youth in High School
The Leadership Coach plays a critical role in the ongoing development of YBLA’s high-achieving high school students. The Leadership Coach provides coaching, direction, instruction, and guidance to young Black students to help them become successful and significant leaders. The Leadership Coach must effectively communicate, engage, challenge, and monitor the participation of the student Ambassadors and parents in a hybrid program model. The Leadership Coach must also possess skills to develop relationships with local, Charlotte metro area high school and community leaders throughout the year to recruit students on their team the following year.
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Coaching
- Provide real-time coaching and leadership for young Black students in high school, maintaining a developmentally appropriate balance between challenge and support
- Responsible for the growth of leadership development in the students
- Responsible for recruiting, selecting, coaching, and retaining the student caseload
- Be an active member of YBLA Toastmasters Club to become Toastmasters certified
Instruction
- Facilitate lessons to students following YBLA’s curriculum and programming guides
- Track the progress and well-being of students
- Serve as Toastmasters Facilitators
Communication
- Communicate regularly with local, Charlotte metro area high schools to cultivate relationships for the recruitment of the next cohort of students
- Communicate status and updates to parents
- Communicate status of students to YBLA Leadership Team
- Actively monitor communication channels (GroupMe) and engage with students
Administration
- Track attendance, completion, and participation of students
- Work with College Advising Team to ensure all students engage and complete all college prep activities
- Assist with the planning and implementation of meetings, retreats, and mission trips
- Track and enter data in YBLA processing platform
- Commitment to being a regular donor of YBLA
Education/Experience
- 4-year degree required
- 6-8 years of professional experience working with high school-aged young Black men
- Must be comfortable going out into high schools and communities to market YBLA Ambassador program to recruit the next cohort of students
- Must be able to develop a relationship with and coach high-achieving Black high school students
- Must have excellent verbal, written, and virtual communication skills with the ability to collaborate and interact with people across multiple generations
- Must be a creative problem solver who is proactive, solutions-oriented, focused, and attentive to students’ and parents’ needs
- Must be available to facilitate sessions during the evening and/or on Saturday
- Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment
- Must be flexible and adapt to changing needs and expectations
Position Requirements:
- Typical work hours:
- Mon/Wed: 1pm-9pm
- Tues/Thurs: 10am-6pm
- Fri: 10am-2pm
- Two Saturdays a month: 9am-4pm
- Ability to work virtually from home (including access to high-speed internet)
- Travel requirements:
- Monthly travel to visit local, Charlotte metro area schools and Saturday in-person meetings
- Travel for weekend retreats, spring/summer service abroad, and work retreats
- International travel during June is required
- Current passport is a MUST!
