Job Title: Lead Summer Sports Camp Counselor

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Reports to: Sports Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Sports and Recreation Camp operates from June 17th-August 22nd 2024. Training day will be June 14th. Shifts are from 8:30am to 1:00pm, Monday-Thursday. Campers are present from 9am-12:30pm.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise children throughout the morning, ensuring their safety and enjoyment of camp.

• Maintain behavioral limits and group order while encouraging happy engagement.

• Carry out pre-planned activities with their group.

• Work with other staff to prepare and participate in special events.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

SECONDARY TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Mandatory reporter of suspected abuse and/or neglect of children, elders and individuals with disabilities.

• Attend scheduled staff meetings.

• Assist in record keeping for the camps.

• Living by the YMCA’s core values – Honesty, Caring, Respect, Responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL LEVEL AT JOB ENTRY

• Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children.

• Must have experience coaching or teaching sports activities, and / or experience as a teacher or classroom assistant, with a demonstrated ability to engage and manage groups of children effectively.

• Emotional maturity and stability.

• Security and judgment necessary to handle crisis situations.

• Must have the physical stamina to lead and participate in activities on a daily basis.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• New Staff Orientation completed within 90 days of hire.

• Redwoods child sexual abuse prevention training completed upon hire.

• Pass a background check.

• CPR/AED/First Aid certification within 60 days.

• Minimum age of 17.

• Must report all time worked accurately and timely.

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary

Pay: $14.50 - $15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 14 – 20 per week
