Camp Orkila is looking for a Seasonal Summer Program Director for the 2022 Summer season. The Summer Program Director directs the program development of the assigned program areas at Camp Orkila in Orcas Island, WA. This position is responsible for ensuring continuity of program and services while providing oversight and development to program staff. 

 

Program Directors provide leadership across all of camp’s summer programs. Program Director’s responsibilities include coaching and supervising staff, working with campers, managing the day-to-day operations of camp, and assisting in problem solving as unique and challenging situations arise. Previous experience working with large groups or managing others in a professional setting is required. Directors are supervised by Executive Director and perform other duties as assigned. Responsibilities

What you'll be doing

1. Establish new program activities and expand program(s) within the community in accordance with the Association and Branch strategic plans related to family support.2. Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and supervise assigned staff and volunteers in assigned areas. Provide development and leadership.3. Compile program statistics and provide data and reports as required. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program(s).4. Provide leadership and support for branch management team, annual fund raising campaign, and volunteer committees/boards as assigned.5. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations, schools and agencies related to family support programs.6. Develop, produce and distribute program information necessary to promote programs, in accordance with branch marketing plans.7. Ensure that safety procedures are followed and that all programs are in compliance with YMCA, contract, accreditation, and all relevant regulations and other applicable standards.8. Ensure high quality programs through innovative program development evaluations and ongoing training of staff.9. Ensure upkeep of related facilities and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates at a seasonal residential camp, both inside and outdoors from late May until mid-September. During this time, you will provide oversight across Camp Orkila’s summer programs and the Y will provide you with on-site housing.  For the remaining months of the year, you will support branch operations likely from our offices in Downtown Seattle.           

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  This position requires the ability to occasionally lift store or janitorial products and supplies, up to 50 pounds.POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The usual camp workweek is six day on and one day off, including training, staff meetings, and regular duties.  Shifts vary depending on group needs. Working nights and weekend shifts is required.  This position will work from May until September. 

 

TRAVEL

This position is required to live onsite at camp. Travel is primarily local during work shifts, although some out-of-the-area travel may be expected.  This is an Authorized Driver position, read more in the Position Requirements.

Qualifications

What we're looking for in an applicant

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant program or equivalent education or experience.
  • Four years or more of related experience, with proven experience in training others.
  • One or more years of experience with staff and volunteer supervision, program development, and budget management.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational and management skills.
  • Experience and knowledge with youth behavior management and child abuse prevention.
  • Intermediate computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office suit (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to visit sites and community organizations.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in year-round camp programming and operation.
  • Knowledge of American Camping Association guidelines.

    Preferred Education/Experience

    • Current state approved first aid certification*• Current state approved CPR certification*• Master’s degree in relevant program or a closely related field from an accredited school.• Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Progressive Swim Instructor Certification• Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful. • Experience with anti-racism practices and coalition building.
