Title: Assistant Swim Coach
Status: Part-Time
Reports to: Director of Competitive Swimming
Job Summary:
Assistant Coaches lead and organize individual swim groups on the Hannibal Hurricane Swim team. Assistant coaches maintain a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants while challenging them with new skills to develop them into a better swimmer overall.
Job Responsibilities:
- Preparation – The assistant coach must allow preparation time to arrange lesson plans, equipment, and any paperwork associated with practices. The assistant coach is also asked to submit completed skill sheets and assessments on a monthly basis of their swimmers.
- Professional Demeanor- The assistant coach represents the YMCA of Hannibal in a positive, professional manner to the community. As a coach on the YMCA swim team, they are restricted to communication with swimmers via social media. Any issues must be made present to the Director of Competitive Swimming.
- Communicate Clearly – Assistant Coaches must be able to communicate with the swimmers when it comes to enforcing rules and discipline during practice and swim meets. They must also poses the necessary communication skills to deliver a productive practice to the participants. Overall, they must have the ability to demonstrate skills as required for class content and use teaching aids such as kickboards, fins, videos, etc. They must also be comfortable to discuss questions and concerns with the Director of Competitive Swimming.
- Maintain Swimming and other Skills –It is important for assistant coaches to be up to date on skills necessary. The assistant coach is required to attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled. They must also have the knowledge and ability to demonstrate skills in swim lessons instruction, CPR/AED and First Aid. They must also obtain the YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving course, USA Swim Coaches Background Check, Lifeguard Certification or Swim Coach Safety Training, and other requirements for YMCA Coaching and USA Coaching.
- Punctuality – Coaches are asked to work scheduled hours which includes beginning and ending class on time; remaining after class to answer participant and/or parent questions as needed, and clean up supplies. They are required to give the Head Coach a 24 hour notice if they are unable to find a sub for their scheduled practice.
Specific Responsibilities
· Attend all scheduled meetings
· Be punctual for all shifts
· Maintain open communication with your Director and co-workers
· Maintain your guard certifications by attending recertification (see recertification contract)
· Interact positively with swimmers, parents, co-workers and the general public.
· Prepare lesson plans prior to class.
· Find a substitute if are unable to cover scheduled practice.
· Communicate Clearly to swimmers of proper swimming skills and practices
· Attend Swim Meets Scheduled
· Teach Positive Sportsmanship to all participants

Restrictions
- Coaches are prohibited to teach YMCA members independently and to charge and collect fees directly. All teaching of YMCA members must go through or facility and operations. Failure to do so can lead to suspension/termination.
- All employees are required to work at least 8 hours per month to maintain complimentary membership status.
- All other guidelines must be followed in accordance with the Employee Handbook.
Skills, Education and Experience:
· 16 years of age or older
· Most hold current YMCA lifeguarding certification which includes standard First Aid, CPR-Pro, AED and Emergency Oxygen certifications. Special consideration may be given to those applicants who have completed water safety instructor class. Must also hold all requirements necessary for YMCA and USA Coaching.

Physical Qualifications:
· Speaking, hearing, seeing, reading, writing, typing, lifting, walking, standing, cleaning, swimming and other necessary skills needed for certifications.
