What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Health & Wellness position at YMCA?
This Director maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all, and provides a quality experience to all members and program participants. As a leader in the health and wellness industry, this position will be responsible for the oversight of all areas and programming under their purview, including group exercise, personal training, program development, member and community engagement, and related healthy living initiatives.
The Director will supervise a team of employees and volunteers and perform administrative and operational functions, including regular direct service hours. Strong relationship-building and leadership skills are required.
- An Associate’s Degree or higher in applied health, sports or recreation management, exercise science (or other related field); or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Related accredited certifications in personal training and/or group exercise
- 3 years of supervisory experience
- 3 years of experience in health and wellness programming to a diverse member base
- Possess strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills
- General knowledge and ability to use computer and tablet functions, including Microsoft Office
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds
- Oversee the operations of the wellness areas and programs to include quality program development, scheduling, member engagement and team development
- Responsible for direct program support to include fitness center coaching, personal training, group fitness class instruction
- Assess, improve and expand existing health and wellness programs
- Recruit, onboard, train and develop department employees
- Collaborate with the People Team to develop strategies for department recruiting, onboarding, performance management, training, and volunteer opportunities
- Develop and maintain the department budget
- Collaborate with the Marketing team and Membership Director to develop communication, promotion, retention and engagement strategies, both internally and externally
- Manage supply inventory, ordering and equipment maintenance needs and contracts
- Represent and promote the Y in the local community by developing positive working and collaborative relationships
