Be part of a dynamic team that is launching an organizational excellence campaign. The YMCA of Montclair is nestled in the heart of downtown Montclair, NJ, just 10 miles west of NYC. This 130-year-old mainstay serves Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, Montclair, Verona, and Clifton.
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Under the direction of the Executive Director the YMCA of Montclair is currently seeking a dynamic, cause-driven leader to join our team as the Healthy Living Director. The Healthy Living Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Healthy Living Department including Personal training, Group exercise, Wellness Intakes and supportive roles in our Chronic Disease programming as we as Community Health programming. This position will also work with the Associate Memebrship Director and Community Health Ambassador to develop strategies to increase member retention and engagement.
- Bachelor’s degree in health, nutrition, exercise science or equivalent and a minimum of two years successful experience in the Health and Wellness fields in a supervisory position.
- The following certifications should be current: Nationally recognized certification in fitness, and PR/CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid.
- Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR effectively.
- Must be willing to obtain YMCA certifications.
- Two to three years experience working with youth, adults and senior in a wellness environment.
- Ability to work heavily with adults, children/youth, and volunteers.
- Must be creative and demonstrate initiative in program development.
- Must be able to project enthusiasm to staff and program participants.
- Proven ability to lead staff and volunteers.
- Ability to work under occasional stressful conditions and to work irregular hours.

- Develops, implements, and manages operating plans to promote program and membership growth for the YMCA. Executes strategies to ensure members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA.
- Direct supervision of all Health and Wellness programs including Group Exercise, Personal Training,and supportive role with Chronic Disease and Community Health programming.
- Participates in the planning of the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budget for member engagement and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
- Hires, trains, and supervises staff including Group Exercise Instructors and Personal Trainers. Develops and retains part time talent and promotes growth within the organization.
- Provides leadership and facilitates effective and efficient communication with staff on a regular basis.
- Ensures staff maintain current certifications.
- Develop thorough understanding and working knowledge of Motionvibe, monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation anylitics in healthy living programs. Develops Group Exercise schedules and regulary audits classes to ensure member needs are met. Ensures all Instructors and Trainers also untilize Motionvibe as requested.
- Works collaboratively with Community Health Ambassador and Associate Memebrship Director to ensure both Association-wide and local community needs are met.
- Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
- Assures compliance with state and local regulations. Ensures program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
- Applies industry knowledge to create innovative and strategic solutions to increase member retention and acquisition. Ensures high quality programs are offered.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear. This work requires the sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential position functions as well as those required for Fitness certifications.
