Position: News Reporter/Research Assistant for The Yomiuri Shimbun (Los Angeles Bureau)

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Job Description:

The Los Angeles Bureau of the Yomiuri Shimbun seeks a reporter/research assistant to help cover news—including in the western and midwestern states, western Canada, and Mexico.

This job primarily involves assisting the Japanese Bureau Chief by monitoring the news and suggesting stories to cover, arranging and conducting interviews, preparing research on a wide range of topics, transcribing interviews, and covering breaking news events.

The work can be fast-paced and there are daily deadlines. The position will require occasional travel to cover major news events and to report feature stories.

Research and interviews are conducted in English, but all writing of Yomiuri articles is done by the Bureau Chief in Japanese; there are no byline opportunities for this position.

Job Duties:

-Newsgathering and research, identify newsworthy events

-Prepare fact sheets and research information for upcoming stories

-Arrange, conduct, and transcribe interviews

-Develop and maintain news sources

-Cover press conferences and other events

-Travel is equired, including on occasion weekend work

-Some administrative duties

Qualifications:

--Keen interest in U.S. political and social issues (including issues related to the 2024 presidential and congressional elections)

-Journalism experience (at a college publication or elsewhere) is preferred

-Bachelor’s degree

-Excellent internet and research skills

-Ability to transcribe documents

-- Spanish language proficiency

--Some basic familiarity with Japan

-Attention to accuracy, detail oriented, ability to multitask effectively

-Driver’s license and ability to drive freeways

-Must already live in Greater Los Angeles region (office is near UCLA)

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $39,000.00 per year
