DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER
YORK COUNTY, NEBRASKA
The attorney selected for this position will report to the Public Defender for York County, Nebraska, as part of a small office dedicated primarily to representing indigent criminal defendants by court appointment.
The position requires an ability to communicate effectively with clients of all types, and involves significant negotiating with prosecutors as well as extensive courtroom work, both in County and District Court. Duties include legal representation of indigent criminal defendants at misdemeanor and felony levels, representation of clients in child support actions, and representation of individuals before the Board of Mental Health. Requires knowledge of criminal law and procedure, strong analytic, client counseling, research and negotiation skills, and the ability to listen, speak and write effectively. The desire and ability to zealously represent indigent clients--many of whom are in need of treatment or other non-legal assistance--is a must.
Base requirements: graduation from an accredited law school and Nebraska Bar Admission.
