QUALIFICATIONS: A valid Indiana Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsements.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Principal

EVALUATED BY: Principal or Designee


SUMMARY

Creates a flexible elementary grade program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth. Establishes effective rapport with students. Motivates students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary grade education, in accordance with the ability of each student. Establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members.


Essential Responsibilities

Teaching Competencies

a. Demonstrates preparation through systematic planning.

b. Has a knowledge and/or understanding of the Calkins Reading and Writing Framework for eventual implementation into the classroom.

c. Is able to incorporate technology into the classroom utilizing iPad instruction.

d. Plans instruction based upon the developmental level of the student.

e. Is able to incorporate technology into the classroom including iPad instruction.

f. Develops clear requirements and expectations and communicates these to students.

g. Utilizes the approved curriculum to develop courses of study.

h. Explains content effectively, puts ideas across logically, and in an orderly way.

i. Uses a variety of teaching strategies and materials to enhance student learning.

j. Demonstrates mastery of content area(s) and possesses a broad scope of knowledge.

k. Uses higher level questioning to help students understand concepts and relationships.

l. Uses appropriate and well-defined techniques to measure student progress.

m. Includes activities which enable students to develop written and oral communication skills.

n. Provides opportunities for students to develop decision-making, creative thinking, and critical thinking skills.

o. Keeps a current and accurate record of student progress.

p. Has teaching materials readily available for all classes.

q. Makes efficient and productive use of instructional time.


Classroom Management Skills

a. Provides reinforcement for positive behavior.

b. Helps students develop positive self-concepts.

c. Deals effectively and consistently with inappropriate behavior.

d. Develops, communicates, and implements a code of conduct for the class.

e. Adheres to school discipline policies.

f. Is consistent and fair in dealing with students.

g. Promotes a warm, open, and accepting class climate.

h. Recognizes individual student needs and provides appropriate assistance and instruction.


Relationship with Parents

a. Communicates with parents regarding student achievement, behavior, and attendance.

b. Takes timely and appropriate action with regard to parent requests and concerns.

c. Displays a willingness to explain class procedures and educational programs to parents.


Relationship with Staff/Administration

a. Shares ideas, materials, and teaching methods and techniques with staff.

b. Adheres to School Board policies, guidelines, and regulations.

c. Uses tact and courtesy in relationships with staff and/or administrators.


Professional Responsibilities

a. Submits reports and grades on-time.

b. Maintains records that are complete, accurate, and legible.

c. Provides plans and other necessary information for substitute teachers.

d. Maintains appropriate confidentiality with students, staff, and parents.

e. Participates in grade level/school-wide meetings and fulfills committee assignments.

f. Fulfills assigned supervisory duties.

g. Attends all trainings for technology and the Calkins Reading/Writing Framework.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

LANGUAGE SKILLS: The ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. The ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. The ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, teachers, students, parents, support staff, and the general public.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
The ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. The ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


REASONING ABILITY: The ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. The ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program; the ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities to whom assigned. The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents. Possesses skills in oral and written communication.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.


The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
