What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nonprofit Summer Program Math Instructor position at Youth Employment Partnership, Inc.?

WHO WE ARE

Founded in 1973 by Oakland teachers and local civic leaders, Youth Employment Partnership, Inc. (YEP) was designed to enhance the employment and education outcomes of low-income and systems-impacted Oakland youth through job training, skill building, and education fused with hands-on work experience.

YEP serves 500-600 14-24 year olds annually, offering a comprehensive menu of employment training, high school credit recovery, transitional housing, and career development programs.

YEP operates out of a campus in Central East Oakland which includes a 26,000 sq. ft. solar-powered workforce training center, 5,000 sq. ft. training warehouse, commercial kitchen, construction workshop, computer lab, alternative high school, tiny home community, and a recently completed 30-bed dormitory for homeless and housing insecure young adults—all designed and built by Oakland youth.

PROGRAM DETAILS & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

In partnership with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), YEP is seeking a math instructor to support students entering the ninth grade (or who have struggled academically their freshman year). This bridge-to-9th academic vocational development program is operated by YEP as an offsite OUSD Summer Expanded Learning Program.

The five-week program (June 24 – July 26) is a blend of math & English basic skill development, career exploration, and vocational training in Bike Building, Culinary Arts, EMT & First Responder, and Mosaic Design. Unlike traditional summer programs, students will be getting paid a daily stipend to develop job skills while also improving their academics.

As a math instructor, you will teach four 90-minute periods of dynamic project-based instruction from 9:15am to 4:30pm, Monday–Thursday, with two paid 15-minute breaks and one 45-minute unpaid lunch break. There will be no more than 15 students per classroom. The periods will be a rotating group of a maximum 60 students, and lessons can be duplicated across the four periods. You will teach at YEP’s workforce training warehouse located at 2300 International Boulevard in Oakland.

In addition to the 6 hours of active teaching time per day (6.5 paid hours per day), Monday-Thursday, YEP will pay for an additional 8 hours per week of class preparation time. Since there are no math or English classes on Fridays, this is usually when teachers choose to complete the next week’s prep. The total weekly hours of paid work will be no more than 40 per week. Additionally, you will have 20 hours of paid time to design curriculum, plan lessons, and prepare materials before instruction begins on June 24th.

Instructors will design their own curriculum in consultation with YEP Directors. Educational programming is aimed at motivating students along with retention and reinforcement of fundamental academic skills to prepare youth to enter high school on strong footing and ensure success.

Programming for students will begin June 10th, where they will take part in orientation, document collection, and four days of pre-training called “Job Readiness Training.” We will run two cohorts before they begin instruction in their math and English classes on June 24th.

We will also observe the following holidays and there will be no classes:

  • Independence Day: Thursday and Friday, July 4-5

QUALIFICATIONS

All candidates must possess the following:

  • B.A. / B.S. degree AND a California teaching credential or substitute permit OR B.A. / B.S. degree AND relevant teaching experience.
  • Dynamic, multi-modal approach to curriculum design and lesson planning.
  • Experience in project-based instruction.
  • Experience in nonprofit environment a plus.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with 14-15 year old students.
  • Excellent classroom management and engagement skills.
  • Strong public speaking, verbal, and written communication skills.

1) Pass an FBI and CA DOJ fingerprint clearance and background check (YEP will provide fingerprinting onsite)

2) Provide proof of tuberculosis screening within the last two years

3) Attain First Aid, concussion, and CPR certification (YEP will schedule your certification if you do not have a current one)
