Position Title: Program Director
Reports to: Elliot A. Rivera, Executive Director
YOUTH IN ACTION:
We are a non-profit organization based in the Southside of Providence that works to support young people of color in RI’s marginalized communities. Our programming provides a co-created space where youth can come together to accomplish our mission: share their stories, practice leadership, and create change in their communities. Youth In Action (YIA) intergenerationally co-create these spaces for youth to accomplish this, so that young people truly find belonging throughout the process. We are able to do this by offering free after school programming (Core, Immersion, Collective), partnering with schools and other youth serving community partners, and organizing and engaging in coalitions and movements for change.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Program Director is responsible for the development and management of all programming at Youth In Action. This position works interdepartmentally with operations, development and the executive team to coordinate program plans, and works intergenerationally with our youth participants to ensure efficacy. The Program Director stays up to date on relevant youth-led and youth-centered programming concepts and theories, and ensures that YIA programming remains responsive, reflexive and in alignment with the agency values and strategic plan.
COMMITMENT/EXPECTATIONS:
- This is an in-person position with flexible virtual working opportunities
- Year round position with (paid) agency closure 2 weeks in the summer and 2 weeks in the winter
- Required work on some late nights, weekends and overnights with ample notice
- Complete an outdoor leadership training and participate in YIA’s Adventure Learning
(Outdoor Series)
- First Friday of the month team meeting 4-6 PM required
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: $55,000 - 58,000 salary with unlimited PTO, agency covered health insurance, 401k with agency 3% match, agency wide professional development opportunities and a self directed professional development/self care stipend.
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Staff Management
- Studies and practices management. Clearly communicates expectations. Connects with individual team members. Celebrates and showcases successes of individual team members and team as a whole. Creates an environment that supports cross-functional analysis and intergenerational problem solving, co-creation and execution.
- Supervise, develop and direct workflow of Program Coordinator (Core & Immersion
Programming) and Special Projects/Collective Coordinator (Collective Programming)
- Support participant recruitment and retention strategy, including transitional moments between YIA programs
- Facilitate curriculum development and evaluation at all levels of programming
- Support youth transitions into, between, and graduating from YIA's programs
- Develop special projects initiatives, including partnership management
- Development, design, and execution of our workshop and training series
- Ensures that there is strong development of the Co-Coordinators (Youth Staff) in their roles throughout programming
Program Management, Design & Development
- Develops, initiates and sets goals for programs aligned to the strategic objectives of the organization, which includes, planning programs from start to completion incorporating deadlines, milestones, and designing and co-authoring program content; creating and supporting partnerships; supporting staff with recruitment; and reporting, tracking progress, and evaluation.
- Identify areas of risk within programmatic structures and collaborate with the Deputy
Director to create the necessary tools to mitigate risk.
- Leads the design (including plans and timelines), documentation and, archiving of external workshops/trainings, along with co-facilitating with youth or alumni
- Develop and maintains program evaluation models, including identifying indicators of success that align with program outcomes and our strategic plan and how it relates to funding
- Develop, approve and monitor all program budgets, including ensuring program costs stay within approved budget
- Supports Development Director with strategic planning on creating program budgets for grants and funded opportunities
External Responsibilities
- Establish, cultivate and maintain community partnerships - partnerships that both support program curriculum and that serve as vehicles for projects and recruitment.
- Represent and act as an ambassador for YIA when in public, attending meetings, having a presence at community events, and telling the story of programming
- Active team member of YIA family - assisting with agency-wide events and annual campaigns
- Participate and maintain outdoor leadership training through agency partnerships
Qualifications
- Need to have:
- 3-5 years of experience in management, leadership and/or administration, and experience working with and empowered by BIPOC youth between the ages of
13 and 24
- Experience coordinating programs, projects or relevant work
- Experience managing diverse, multidisciplinary, and intergenerational teams,
individuals, and partnerships
- Experience with youth power-building and values the autonomy and expertise of youth
- Strong facilitation and communication skills
- Advocacy and community organizing exposure
- Demonstrates resourcefulness in setting priorities, and solves complex programming problems through innovative and creative thinking and implementation.
- Works through a lens of Cultural Humility
- Approachable and collaborative team player, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work with a variety of staff, volunteers, and families.
- Demonstrates thoughtful action, highly relationship-oriented, accomplish work with and through others via purposeful collaboration.
- Nice to have:
- Proficiency working with data sets (ex. Salesforce) and budget management with a , impact data & storytelling
- Applicants who live and/or are familiar with the nonprofit sector and policy landscape of Rhode Island
- Experience and/or passion for the outdoors (camping, hiking, etc.)
