WORK SCHEDULE: This position is full-time regular and exempt and generally works Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Will require working some weekends and evenings.

ABOUT YOUTHCARE: YouthCare works to end youth homelessness and to ensure that young people are valued for who they are and empowered to achieve their potential. Founded in 1974, YouthCare was one of the first programs to serve runaway and homeless youth on the West Coast. The goal was to help young people find safety today and build a future for tomorrow. Over four decades, we’ve defined best practices and developed programs that are a national standard for excellence. Using a youth-centered approach, we ensure that young people experiencing homelessness ages 12-24 have the hope, skills, and confidence to gain long-term stability. With forty years of successes, expertise, and history, YouthCare is uniquely positioned to amplify the needs of homeless youth and young adults in our region and provide national leadership on serving youth in crisis.

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of Communications Director, the Communications Manager will create compelling communications content, expand YouthCare’s digital platforms, and build upon YouthCare’s brand and reputation with all externally facing audiences. The Communications Manager will execute on YouthCare’s external communications goals.

The Communications Manager will help to share youth stories through various communication platforms to educate donors, and inspire the community to give, get involved, and take action to end youth homelessness. Success in the role requires writing, project management, brand management, and social media skills.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Communications & Marketing

  • In conjunction with the Communications Director, develop and implement annual collateral, advertising, and communications production calendar to engage the community and bring YouthCare’s key messages to new audiences.
  • Maintain a communications calendar and in support of agency activities;
  • As outlined in the communication production calendar, manage the design of all agency collateral and external communications, including print and electronic newsletters, key donor relations materials, community engagement materials, and YouthCare’s annual report.
  • Lead and write compelling content to build awareness about youth experiencing homelessness, amplify youth voice, and leverage staff expertise on all communications platforms.
  • Collaborate with teams across the agency to develop content to build awareness about youth experiencing homelessness, amplify youth voice, and leverage staff expertise on all communications platforms in alignment with team goals.
  • Collaborate with the agency teams to raise awareness about community partners, especially BIPOC partners, third-party events, benefit events, and community drives.
  • Maintain fidelity to YouthCare’s Branding and Style Guide efforts; train and support staff with adherence to branding and messaging guidelines.
  • Research, assess, test, and implement innovative digital storytelling practices and platforms, including the creative use of video and new media, while serving as a resource for best practices.
  • Lead YouthCare’s social media strategy and campaigns; identify trend & insights; leverage data analytics to adjust and optimize strategy.
  • Oversee website management and maintenance to ensure information and content And SEO is accessible, compelling, and up to date.
  • Lead content integration across digital channels and platforms with other technologies as opportunities identified, such as VolunteerHub, Classy, and other peer-to-peer fundraising platforms.
  • Research and build new processes to optimize YouthCare’s advertising and outreach strategies and practice.
  • Oversee the strategic development of content across all digital channels.
  • Provide expertise and support to the Communications Team regarding YouthCare’s website.
  • Identify and achieve growth metrics YouthCare’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Communications, coordinate media requests and oversee media@youthcare.org.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Collaborate with team members across the agency of all levels
  • Develop trainings and communications toolkits for both internal and external uses.
  • Facilitate trainings to support team members, (e.g. media engagement, public speaking).
  • Partner with team members across the agency to ensure communications practices align with YouthCare’s values.
  • Introduce new ideas to help increase the effectiveness of communications team process and operations.
  • Provide strategic vision to strengthen relations between communications team and program staff.

QUALIFICATIONS –

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:      

  • Three or more years of experience in communications, marketing, media relations, leading social media tools, writing, project management, or development.
  • Strong story-telling experience; the ability to create compelling content to inspire action
  • Unwavering commitment to the mission of YouthCare and the young people we serve.
  • Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion and anti-racism work.
  • Social media savvy and well-versed in communications trends and research.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while remaining focused on the needs of the young people we serve.
  • Excellent communication skills and impeccable follow-through.
  • Ability to work effectively and maintain positive relationships with internal staff members and external constituents.
  • Ability to effectively represent YouthCare's mission and commitment to social justice in communication materials and in the community.
  • Self-starter and team player.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience with website management, customer relationship management, graphic design and video editing software, including WordPress, Raiser’s Edge, Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Experience working in nonprofit development or communications department.
  • Comfort with editing and proofreading various documents and templates.
     

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must be able to provide I-9 supporting documentation for employment.
  • Computer software skills including Windows, Microsoft outlook, Microsoft Word.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with good quality spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Initiative, creativity, reliability, flexibility, thoroughness.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 50 pounds. Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; running for brief periods of time; and go up and down stairs.
