 YR Media is seeking a seasonal, part-time Video/Film Instructor  in our Oakland HQ for the upcoming Summer Session! 


The ideal candidate will have a love of working with young people, be familiar with youth development principles and practices, and be comfortable with facilitating interactive teaching and learning. They will have experience with video and experience in digital media, and storytelling. 

  

Responsibilities:

  • Provide dynamic in-person classroom instruction for up to twelve youth 14-24 years old. Collaborate with instructor peers as well as other media education team colleagues;
  • Develop, facilitate and refine age appropriate and interactive curriculum aligned with our Oakland Headquarters curriculum standards, specific to the video track including but is not limited to understanding different image composition elements, creating a shot list, producing video clips for scenes, writing and producing a roundtable newscast, creating storyboards and shot list for film production, editing video projects on Adobe Premiere Pro and understanding the different forms of documentary storytelling;
  • Curriculum to include key lessons on media literacy and youth employment soft skills;
  • Scale up to train, support and  supervise a team of peer youth educators;
  • Accurately track through our student-facing systems youth progress towards program completion;
  • Perform administrative and communication duties as it relates to the instructor role (quarterly session calendar, Slack channel communications, Mighty Network platform, attendance tracking, tracking program completion, etc.);
  • Oversee Video Studio including, maintenance of recording equipment, space booking and scheduling, youth equipment training, etc. 
  • Support the department’s strategic track alignment with YR Media’s Oakland headquarters and across YR Media’s Media Education and Employment Pathway including curriculum, software, evaluation and matriculation, including potential production support as needed;
  • Support program outreach and recruitment as needed;
  • Maintain classroom and building rules and a safe and professional  learning/working environment.
  • Other duties as assigned 

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of experience teaching video in classroom or community settings
  • Ability to skillfully facilitate in-person teaching and learning (occasional hybrid and virtual)
  • Ability to design and adapt youth friendly and interactive curriculum
  • Familiarity with and ability to teach key media literacy topics
  • Software and proficiency:  Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Ability to teach video skills that may include:
    • Understanding different image compositions elements
    • Creating a shot list
    • Producing video clips for scenes
    • Recording audio and foley
    • Writing and producing a roundtable newscast
    • Understanding the theory behind cinematography
    • Learning camera and production terminology
    • Operating Sony A7siii
    • Creating storyboards and shot list for film production
    • Handling media management and storage
    • Editing video projects on Adobe Premiere Pro
    • Understanding the different forms of documentary storytelling
    • Knowing how to create a story arc within video storytelling
  • Demonstrated classroom management skills 
  • Youth Development Practitioner Experience 
  • BA/BS or teaching credential preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with BIPOC youth
  • Strong organizational skills including ability to create and refine effective program systems
