JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: SHELTER COORDINATOR FSLA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

JOB SUMMARY : The Shelter Coordinator is a supervisory position that has primary responsibility for, in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer, the operation of the residential services and case management of residential clients. As part of a team of shelter staff, the Shelter Coordinator is responsible for supervising and supporting shelter advocates in assisting, advocating, and enabling survivors of domestic violence and their families who are temporarily residing in the emergency shelter to be safe, empowered, and have increased ability to be independent and free of violence. Performance of duties reflects the YWCA empowerment philosophy and value that all persons will be treated with respect and dignity and approached with the recognition of their individual importance.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answer and help the 24-hour domestic violence hotline.
  • 24-hour availability to residential staff for crisis or emergencies.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training new shelter advocates.
  • Responsible for overseeing shelter advocates in cleaning and preparing client's room.
  • Coordinate donations and partnerships with community organizations
  • Responsible for completing quality assurance on client's files.
  • Refers clients to YWCA internal programs as well as appropriate community resources for services not covered by YWCA Great Falls.
  • Responsible for supervision of Shelter Advocates.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all residential and hotline staff receive appropriate, ongoing supervision around issues of personal and professional safety specific to domestic violence work at least once a week.
  • In charge of placing orders for office supplies, cleaning supplies and food for clients.
  • Responsible for ensuring the following services are provided to shelter clients: crisis counseling, intakes, individual counseling, assessments, case management, and advocacy.
  • Responsible for creating an empowering living environment for shelter clients.
  • Responsible for maintaining and reporting shelter statistics.
  • Responsible for assisting COO with the implementation of shelter policies and programs.
  • Supervise operational functions including meal preparation and chores to ensure cleanliness of facility.
  • Notifies COO when unusual cases, irregularities, accidents, or illness occur.
  • Ensure adequate training for all direct care staff including but not limited to issues of domestic violence, sexual trauma, safety planning, substance abuse, mental health, cultural competence, welfare rights, immigration, counseling, and intervention skills.
  • Conduct house meetings and coordinate other groups for shelter residents addressing issues such as social services, stress, nutrition, etc.
  • Advocate for residents in a cooperative manner with other agencies, law enforcement personnel, and other officials as needed.
  • Provide follow-up support to graduates of the Mercy Home Shelter program
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client information, staff information, and shelter location
  • Coordinate with other direct service staff to provide services for YWCA participants
  • Coordinate clients' participation in community events as needed.
  • Attending staff meetings, conferences and training as directed.
  • Represent agency as required at community events, health fairs, etc.
  • Conduct outside presentations as required.
  • Responsible for modeling healthy boundaries, respectful behavior, and open communication.
  • Provide COO with information on potential problems and assist in the development of solutions and/or innovative approaches to problems.
  • Other duties as assigned by COO.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Three years’ experience working with domestic and/or sexual violence
  • Must pass a background check designed to protect the interest of women and children served by the YWCA programs
  • Must possess a current Montana Driver’s License

JOB RELATIONSHIPS :

  • Directly accountable to the COO
  • Supervise Shelter Advocates
  • Has daily contact with staff, volunteers, and adult and child clients

WORK HOURS : Hours for this position will be 40 hours per week; 5 days a week. A specific schedule will be agreed upon with your supervisor. Community participation, shelter coverage, or emergency situations may necessitate additional evening and/or weekend hours.

LEVEL OF INDEPENDENT DISCRETION, CONSEQUENCE OF ACTIONS: This person, within the parameters of the YWCA policies and procedures, exercises a very high level of independence in decision-making. Significant errors in judgment may endanger the health and safety of the participants and/or staff and may cause serious financial and/or legal repercussions for the YWCA.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Essential duties require the following: Ability to sit for extended periods of time, stand, bend, and lift up to twenty-five pounds. Ability to move furniture articles, with assistance, as needed. Exposure to difficult situations and emotionally taxing client circumstances, including physical aggression and unpleasant living conditions, may be encountered.
