Reports to: Director of Facilities

Schedule: Part Time, 20 hours/week

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Rate: Competitive, Commensurate with Experience

The YWCA of Western MA is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering survivors. The YW provides a safe place for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Our programs and services include crisis shelter and transitional housing for survivors and their families, counseling, SAFEPLAN court advocacy, community education, supervised visitation, and vocational training for youth. The YWCA provides services at several sites, including Holyoke, Northampton, Westfield, and our primary Springfield campus.

Position Purpose

The Building & Maintenance Custodian performs custodial and maintenance duties necessary for YWCA functioning, safety, and orderly condition. These duties include general building repairs, grounds, vehicle, and equipment maintenance, as well as general cleaning. The Building & Maintenance Custodian will be assigned to work in several YWCA locations including Springfield, Holyoke, and Northampton.

Additional Expectations of Position

In the performance of essential and general job responsibilities, the Building & Maintenance Custodian is expected to:

  • Restrict use of YWCA vehicles and equipment to normal business hours.
  • Return YWCA vehicles and equipment to the Springfield location at the end of the work day.
  • Communicate regularly with the Director regarding the status of recurring tasks.
  • Provide emergency on-call assistance after business hours, using the YWCA-issued mobile phone, in response to weather or other unforeseen events.
  • Provide emergency on-call assistance after business hours when the Director of Facilities is unavailable.

Essential Responsibilities to be Performed on a Daily Basis

  • Cleans, sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and polishes counters and floors by hand or by machine as appropriate.
  • Cleans carpet, upholstery and furniture.
  • Washes windows, screens, sills, woodwork, doors, desks, walls, and ceilings.
  • Cleans and sanitizes rest rooms, dusts and vacuums rooms, locks and unlocks doors.
  • Collects and disposes of trash and recycling for curbside pick-up.
  • Maintains custodial closets.
  • Moves equipment and furniture.
  • Sets up and takes down tables and chairs for classes and programs.
  • Maintains appropriate records of each assigned work request and submits completed forms in a timely manner.
  • Provide on-call assistance during work days from 8am – 4pm using the YWCA-issued mobile phone for the purpose of responding to urgent needs.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Essential Responsibilities to be Performed on a Weekly Basis

  • Maintains outside parking lots, sidewalks, and facility entrances by removing snow, applying salt when necessary, and clearing debris.
  • Mows lawns, trims plants, and clears leaves.
  • As requested, provides guidance to subcontractors about specific building systems while accompanying subcontractors during inspections.

Essential Responsibilities to be Performed on an As-Needed Basis

  • Provides maintenance and minor repairs to plumbing, electrical, HVAC and building envelop systems.
  • Performs maintenance of buildings by repairing siding, patching walls, and painting walls and trim. Replaces fixtures, ceiling, and floor tiles. Repairs door hardware, closures and panic bars.
  • Purchases supplies and minor equipment necessary to complete assigned work.

Qualifications

  • Five (5) year experience in custodial and general building maintenance;
  • General knowledge of heating, ventilating equipment, plumbing, electrical, and building envelop systems;
  • General operational knowledge of snow blowers, plowing, and lawn maintenance equipment;
  • General operational knowledge of floor buffers among other custodial equipment and tools utilized in building maintenance;
  • Thorough knowledge of proper safety techniques and procedures;
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of hand tools.
  • Ability to understand and carry out routine oral and written instructions, make routine decisions, sustain long periods of light to moderately heavy physical activity, and work harmoniously with others;
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs; and
  • Access to reliable transportation and valid driver’s license required. Must be eligible for coverage by the agency's insurance policy.
