The scientific study of plants, including bacteria, algae, and fungi, as well as mosses, lichens, ferns, flowering plants, and conifers, is known as botany. Despite the classification of bacteria, algae, and fungi as separate kingdoms, colleges and universities offer coursework that covers all of these groups under the study of botany. Scientists who specialize in the study of plants in this broad sense are all considered "botanists," regardless of their specific area of expertise.
