Becoming a psychiatrist requires attending medical school and involves monitoring and prescribing psychopharmacological medications to treat mental illnesses. If you prefer not to attend medical school, you may want to consider becoming a psychologist, who provides talk therapy without prescribing medication. Aspiring psychiatrists must first complete four years of medical school to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and then spend four additional years in residency, gaining experience in psychiatry and neurology.
