Becoming a stenographer, or court reporter, involves completing a formal training program in stenography and obtaining certification from a professional organization such as the National Court Reporters Association. Stenographers transcribe spoken or recorded speech into written form, and may work in courtrooms, law offices, or other settings. They must have excellent typing and listening skills, as well as a strong understanding of legal terminology and procedures.
