PetSmart, a chain of pet stores in the United States, is owned by BC Partners and Argos Holdings Inc. It was originally founded as PetFood Warehouse in 1987 by Jim and Janice Dougherty. However, the company struggled to turn a profit and was eventually taken over by investors who hired Samuel J. Parker as president and CEO. Under Parker‘s leadership, the company was rebranded as PetSmart and began to expand its offerings. In 1993, PetSmart went public on the NASDAQ, but faced challenges from online competitors in 2014. After a bidding war, BC Partners completed a leveraged buyout of PetSmart for $8.7 billion.
