Peter Young Housing, Industries and Treatment (PYHIT) is comprised of five nonprofit entities and additional for-profit ventures that provide addiction treatment, housing and vocational and employment services across New York. It was founded by Father Peter Young, a compassionate and hardworking priest whose efforts to help the poor, addicted and incarcerated grew into a multifaceted and highly respected service organization that has been creating taxpayers for more than 50 years. Father Young realized early on that addiction was a disease that needed treatment, not incarceration. He counseled prison parolees who had no hope for their future upon release. And he knew that supporting successful recovery and integration into society meant his programs needed to include treatment, housing and employment - like the foundations supporting a three-legged stool. Today, PYHIT oversees services in 17 counties, from New York City, north to the Canadian border and as far west as Syracuse and Buffalo. With more than 450 employees, PYHIT serves 10,000 individuals each year, including the chemically addicted, the homeless, the unemployed, parolees, veterans, HIV-positive individuals and refugees. PYHIT operates 18 certified addiction treatment facilities across the state. It owns or leases 70 residential properties, providing housing for more than 6,100 individuals. PYHIT also provides job training and employment services to more than 1,100 annually.
