In 1876, when the Omaha and Republican Railroad (now Union Pacific) extended its line from Valley to Lincoln, it was decided that a village named Clear Creek would be platted where Yutan currently stands. Due to confusion with Clearwater, Nebraska, the villages name was changed on June 6, 1884, to Yutan, in memory of Chief Itan, of the Oto-Missouri Indians who had an encampment southeast of Yutan until 1835. Yutan was originally settled by predominantly German and Swiss immigrants who homesteaded farms in the area after the Civil War. On December 30, 1997, the Village of Yutan was proclaimed a City of the Second Class. The first mayor took office on June 16, 1998, along with the first city council. The City of Yutan is a small, close-knit community that is located within the Omaha metropolitan area. Located fifteen minutes from Omaha, thirty from Fremont, and forty-five from Lincoln, Yutans residents enjoy vast employment opportunities while avoiding the higher cost of living that often accompanies urban areas. Yutan boasts a well-maintained park system comprised of a splash pad, four ballfields, and two playgrounds. The community is also served by a library that provides updated, engaging materials and programming for all audiences. With its close proximity to the Omaha and Lincoln metropolitan areas, Yutan is poised for growth in the coming years. Yutans population has been trending upward with the development of the Itan Subdivision, which has added eighty-six (86) residential lots. The Mayor and City Council of Yutan strive to maintain the community's identity while ensuring responsible growth and a well-maintained infrastructure that meets the needs of all residents. Yutan's elected officials utilize the City's comprehensive plan, subdivision regulations, and zoning ordinance to guide development. As development in northeast Nebraska continues to grow, the City of Yutan will continue to plan for the future while remaining a small town at heart.
