CHAC (Community Health Awareness Council) is a nonprofit mental health services agency in Mountain View, California. CHAC was founded in 1973 under a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA), in partnership with the cities of Mountain View, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills, and three school districts - Mountain View-Whisman, Los Altos, and Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District. These Joint Powers came together to form CHAC in response to concerns in these communities about drug and alcohol use among their young people. In the 41 years since our founding, the demand for services and programs has continued to grow, and CHAC has responded by expanding its services and developing many new and diverse programs for the community. Recently, CHAC added the Sunnyvale Elementary School District to the campuses on which we provide our services. Today, CHAC annually serves more than 15,000 youth and adults at our clinic and on 33 school campuses. On campus we see children and youth from Kindergarten through high-school age, for individual counseling and groups, addressing problems such as anxiety, depression, academic stress, social skills, autistic spectrum issues, suicidality, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, gang participation, family difficulties, and more. Many school programs are aimed at helping youth learn to avoid unhealthy or dangerous activities and to develop resilience, good decision-making, and the ability to delay gratification. At our clinic on El Camino Real, we see people of all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic circumstances in individual therapy, couples counseling, family therapy, and groups. All services are offered in Spanish as well as English, and our therapists speak a number of other languages as well, including Farsi, Hebrew, Mandarin, and French. In addition, fees for CHAC services are determined according to a sliding scale, so no one is turned away due to inability to pay.
