KCIS serves students in K-12. What is the rationale for using community partners? The national Communities In Schools model utilizes community partners for various reasons. By creating partnerships within the community, we are able to assist the schools with a wider variety of services that they've identified as needs. We also help foster a sense of pride within the schools by showing that the community around them is concerned about their well-being. Why isn't KCIS in every KPS building? Schools choose to partner with KCIS and commit to supporting the position of a Site Coordinator. Capacity is also an issue and we plan to add more schools who have expressed interest in becoming full service schools as funding permits. How does KCIS use volunteers? There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to become involved with KCIS. Volunteers fill out an application, providing information which allows us to do a background check, required of volunteers working with students in Kalamazoo Public Schools. Volunteers meet with the Volunteer Coordinator and attend an orientation. Volunteer opportunities include mentoring and tutoring one-on-one with students, helping out in classrooms, working in the after-school programs, helping out with special events such as Bagels and Books, working in school gardens or greenhouses with students, conducting special interest activites such as a knitting club or cooking lessons. If you have interests or skills you want to share with students, we can usually find a way to make that happen. Does KCIS provide services only to students? We have a number of programs designed to benefit parents and other family members. Examples include parent education (Milwood after-school program,) referrals for housing and social services, a collaboration with the Food Bank, and Spring Valley Elementary houses a Department of Human Services office where parents of children from the schol can have convenient access to services. Why does KCIS ask volunteer tutors and mentors to volunteer once a week for ...
