EXS Capital was founded at the top of the market in 2007 by principals who had worked for several of the region's leading private equity funds, investment banks and financial advisors. We started EXS Capital because we felt that we would be able to better serve our clients as an independent organization with a new approach. Over the course of the last several years we have seen first-hand how the interests of large financial institutions and their counter-parties have become increasingly misaligned. The emphasis became increasingly biased towards transaction volume and velocity, with management focused on their own short-term commissions and bonuses, at the expense of risk management and real investment performance. The resulting global financial crisis caused severe destruction of wealth for both investors and the financial institutions themselves (or at least their shareholders) as well as considerable dislocations for major economies, the reverberations of which are still being felt today. In Asian alternatives, traditional hedge fund and private equity structures have incentivized fund managers to focus on "building assets under management" and "putting money to work" in order to justify big funds and high management fees. Over-leveraged portfolios without holding power ended in disaster during the global financial crisis for several large funds, in particular those sponsored by the biggest global investment banks. Likewise, in Asian wealth management, independent financial advisors and private bankers mis-sold their clients unsuitable financial products like "mini-bonds" and "accumulators" with high, heavy and hidden commissions. Unbeknownst to their clients, the counter-party on these proprietary products was often the bank selling it, making it hard to believe that the "client's interests come first".
