The Gator Detachment is made up primarily of Marine veterans and friends. We formed in Alachua County in 1998. Our members are from Gainesville, Alachua, Archer, High Springs, Keystone Heights, Hawthorne and other surrounding towns. We are veterans of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, as well as peacetime Marines. We are men and women. We were grunts, logistics, artillery, admin, supply, operations, cooks and many other MOS's, but we were all riflemen and Marines. We now exist to serve not only as a group where Marines of all eras bond together, but unite in efforts to do things for our community. Joined with us are men and women who choose to serve beside us, helping us in our missions and waving Old Glory.

  1. spiritual care: Spiritual care attends to a person's spiritual or religious needs as he or she copes with illness, loss, grief or pain and can help him or her heal emotionally as well as physically.
  2. Pastoral Care: Pastoral care is an ancient model of emotional and spiritual support that can be found in all cultures and traditions. The term is considered[by whom?] inclusive of distinctly non-religious forms of support as well as of those from religious communities. Humanist groups, which act on behalf of non-religious people, have developed pastoral care offerings in response to growing demand for the provision of like-minded support from populations undergoing rapid secularisation, such as the UK. Humanists UK for example manages the Non-Religious Pastoral Support Network, a network of trained and accredited volunteers who operate throughout prisons, hospitals, and universities in the UK. The terms pastoral care and pastoral support are preferred because these sound less religious than terms such as chaplaincy. Surveys have shown that more than two thirds of patients support non-religious pastoral care being available in British institutions. Similar offerings are available from humanist groups around Europe and North America.
