The High Country Chapter of the MOAA was formed in 2004 and serves Avery, Mitchell, and Watauga counties. The Military Officers Association of America is a non-profit veterans' association dedicated to maintaining a strong national defense and to preserving the earned entitlements of members of the uniformed services and their families and survivors. Membership is open to those who hold or have ever held a warrant or commission in any component of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, or NOAA and their surviving spouses. This is an image of our Challenge Coin and another picture of some of our local dignitaries who received a coin for their role in helping us achieve our goal of creating the Watauga County Veterans Memorial. Challenge Coins may be purchased for $10. The photo shows: HCCMOAA Member George Brudzinski, Town Clerk Nicole Harmon, HCCMOAA Member Ben Covington, Boone Town Manager John Ward, Boone Mayor Rennie Brantz, and HCCMOAA Member Fred Schmitt. Over the previous 15 years, the High Country Chapter has helped coordinate activities among the various veterans-oriented groups for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. At each event we typically have 400-500 attendees in the Boone Mall. In an effort to give our attendees more time to gain comfort and confidence as we emerge from previous restrictions we decided to maintain the smaller venue for this year's Memorial Day Ceremony. Although we had a smaller ceremony, we were still able to have a moving experience in honor of Memorial Day. Please check out last year's video of the Memorial Day Ceremony .
