Its 30.10 acres of land, are bordered on the south side by Piñero Avenue, which connects San Juan to Carolina, and on the west side by Ponce de León Avenue - one of the busiest roads in San Juan. Its centralized location and the surrounding infrastructure makes it very accessible to the public, allowing it to serve a large segment of the population of San Juan and other nearby areas. The Sociedad is one of the oldest health centers in Puerto Rico. A group of Spaniards looking to provide its community in Puerto Rico with sanitary care and spiritual support founded it in 1883. Soon its services were extended and available to the community at large. The Sociedad even established a Health Plan which, in return for a monthly fee, members would receive medical attention, hospitalization services and all other basic services related to health. The implementation of this Health Plan, made the Society a pioneer in the health care industry, anticipating today's HMOs (Health Maintenance Organization). The Society was originally based in Old San Juan, where it offered health care services to the local residents. In 1913, it moved to its current location in Hato Rey. In 1979 it increased its capacity for housing patients by adding 236 beds to the 150 existing at the time, for a total of 386. This was possible thanks to the construction of a nine story building destined to become its main building, at a cost of $5 million. In 1966, was first accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. And, in 1993, the amount of beds increased again from 386, to 428. In 1996 it became accredited by the Junta de Comisión de Acreditación de Hospitales.
