The Miami Workers Center is a progressive strategy and action center based in the Liberty City area of Miami, Florida. Founded in 1999 by former union organizers and concerned residents, MWC quickly became an innovative organization fueled by passion and grounded in a commitment to build grassroots community power and eliminate oppression. Through aggressive community organizing paired with political education, MWC trains and nurtures emerging community leaders and helps them build local grassroots organizations, including LIFFT (Lower Income Families Fighting Together) and MIA (Miami en Accion). The Center, along with LIFFT, MIA and local allies, consistently challenges the current power structure to win racial, community, social, and economic justice. To amplify progressive power MWC actively builds coalitions, leading and strongly participating in local and national organizations and alliances. As MWC moves forward, we seek to leverage these experiences and our victories to sharpen the focus of our racial and economic justice campaigns on building regional power in Miami and South Florida, while at the same time staying actively involved in broader coalitions such as Florida New Majority, among many others. In 2012 MWC will have a staff of 8-10 as well as 150 active members of our grassroots organizations LIFFT and MIA. Our reach also extends to tens of thousands of local residents that we have met as we knock on doors and organize actions across communities. Fueled by a budget of approximately $1 million (with 93% of funds coming from foundations, 4% from individuals, 2% from events, and 1% from donors) we are well positioned to both diversify our sources of support and move strongly forward in our mission.
