M.I.T.C.H. was founded on a passion for academic excellence and the idea that all children should have the opportunity to learn in an outstanding school environment. Debi Lorence and Mitch Andrews were the best of childhood friends and graduated together from Tigard high School in the Class of 1982. Both young women pursued college, then professions - Andrews in business and Lorence in education. Unfortunately, neither young woman felt that their public education had prepared them well for success in college or career. In 1996 Lorence and Andrews decided, after they both had married and each had two children, as well as working in their careers for ten years, that they should try to provide a different kind of educational opportunity for all children, but private schools were the only alternative to public education at the time. Lorence and Andrews devoted hundreds of hours researching the best schools worldwide. Many types of schools were investigated and many kinds of curriculum were explored. While the options for schools seemed overwhelming at first, the logical approach was to identify those schools who were recognized nationally for their academic excellence and to analyze what made them successful. The women determined that schools with a strong, sequential curriculum and an agricultural emphasis were extremely successful in student achievement. Lorence and Andrews partnered a strong hands-on approach with the Core Knowledge Sequence, Saxon Math, and The Writing and Spelling Road to Reading and Thinking, and an agricultural focus to complete the M.I.T.C.H. educational model; the Multi-sensory Instruction Teaching Children Hands-on model continues in use today. In May, 1999, the Oregon Public Charter School law passed providing for unprecedented parental choice in public education.
