Shoresh was founded in 1979 as a small summer camp in Frederick, MD by Rabbi Morris Kosman, the Rabbi of Congregation Beth Sholom. Rabbi Kosman founded Shoresh with the single goal of bringing Jewish children closer to their roots through a rich Jewish studies program with an extensive range of physical activities - designed to create a total Jewish experience for body, mind, and soul. Shoresh was a small operation, with 19 campers, all from Frederick. In 1981, Rabbi David Finkelstein assumed responsibility for Shoresh's daily operations, and by 1984 he was running all of its programs as well as brainstorming about how to increase the number of children and families who participated. Rabbi Finkelstein is a professional Jewish educator who understood how to relate to children, and camp enrollment grew exponentially. The 2014 camp season that just concluded had 417 campers from five states. Over the years, additional programming was added, often in direct response to overwhelming demand from Camp Shoresh families. Since the camp began, it hosted informal monthly social and educational events for campers and their families. More formal programming was added gradually, with a Teen Torah Center introduced in 1986. An Adult Education component, with courses ranging from Hebrew reading to classes in Kabbalah and how to raise Jewish families was added in 1990. Currently, Shoresh serves more than 1,000 people a year through the various programs and events that take place on the Shoresh campus and in cities around the MD/DC/VA area. For years, Shoresh rented space from public schools, Congregation Beth Sholom and other facilities to house its programs. In 1999, we realized a decades-long dream of building a campus. This houses our summer camp and year-round programs and includes facilities such as a 17,000 square-foot Community Center, Bunk Houses for daily study and overnights, a pool and a pool house, many sports fields, an Arts & Crafts Center, game room, '50's Diner, dance studio, Challenge Course with 2 zip lines, ...

At Shoresh Inc, specify the abilities and skills that a person needs in order to carry out the specified job duties. Each competency has five to ten behavioral assertions that can be observed, each with a corresponding performance level (from one to five) that is required for a particular job.

  1. Bookkeeping: Bookkeeping is the recording of financial transactions, and is part of the process of accounting in business. Transactions include purchases, sales, receipts, and payments by an individual person or an organization/corporation. There are several standard methods of bookkeeping, including the single-entry and double-entry bookkeeping systems. While these may be viewed as "real" bookkeeping, any process for recording financial transactions is a bookkeeping process. Bookkeeping is the work of a bookkeeper (or book-keeper), who records the day-to-day financial transactions of a business. They usually write the daybooks (which contain records of sales, purchases, receipts, and payments), and document each financial transaction, whether cash or credit, into the correct daybook—that is, petty cash book, suppliers ledger, customer ledger, etc.—and the general ledger. Thereafter, an accountant can create financial reports from the information recorded by the bookkeeper.
  2. Accounting: Creating financial statements and reports based on the summary of financial and business transactions.
  3. Accounts Payable: Accounts payable (AP) is money owed by a business to its suppliers shown as a liability on a company's balance sheet. It is distinct from notes payable liabilities, which are debts created by formal legal instrument documents.
  4. Accounts Receivable: Accounts receivable is a legally enforceable claim for payment held by a business for goods supplied and/or services rendered that customers/clients have ordered but not paid for. These are generally in the form of invoices raised by a business and delivered to the customer for payment within an agreed time frame. Accounts receivable is shown in a balance sheet as an asset. It is one of a series of accounting transactions dealing with the billing of a customer for goods and services that the customer has ordered. These may be distinguished from notes receivable, which are debts created through formal legal instruments called promissory notes.
  5. General Ledger: Creating and keeping track of business transactions and activities to monitor financial operations.
