Tampa Cargo was founded in Medelln, Colombia, on May 11, 1973 by Luis H. Coulson. It started operations with charter flights on a DC-6 airplane transporting flowers to the United States. In 1979 Aerolnea Civil de Colombia assigned the cargo company different routes in the Western Hemisphere. Thanks to its rapid expansion, it opened bases in Barranquilla and in Cali in 1982. In 1990 the Colombian Government awarded Tampa Cargo the Cross to Aeronautics Merit. In December 1996, Tampa Cargo signed a strategic alliance with the Dutch airline Martinair; the latter acquired an initial package of the Company stock; it later became Tampa's majority shareholde. On July 26, 2003 the Company inaugurated its Maintenance Hangar in Rionegro-Antioquia and the new route to Peru was placed in operation that same year. In September 2004 Tampa Cargo started its fleet renovation by incorporating four Boeing 767-200ER charter aircraft. 2006 was a year for acknowledgements: it was granted the Logyca award and the Colombian Civil Aeronautics Authority Silver Cross to Merit. On April 1, 2008 Tampa Cargo signed a preliminary agreement with Avianca that terminated three months later, on July 23, with the acquisition of Tampa Cargo by Grupo Synergy, to which Avianca is economically bound. In September 2008 the contractual agreement between Tampa Cargo and Avianca was signed for handling the available capacity of the Avianca commercial aircrafts. On February 1, 2010 Tampa Cargo was advised that, after concluding the regulatory approval and the approval of competences required to concrete the union announced in October 2009, Synergy Aerospace Corp., the owner of AVIANCA, and Kingsland Holding Limited, the owner of Grupo TACA, signed the Agreement through which the closing that started up the strategic union of their businesses was made official, and that the name of the strategic union was AviancaTaca.
