Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada (VMSN) was established in 2008 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to find a way to provide access to health care to the Southern Nevada's working families. It is estimated that one out of seven are uninsured in America, approximately 400,000 in Southern Nevada. In a recent article by Family USA, it was noted that one Nevadan dies every day due to a lack of health insurance. At VMSN, we will provide preventative health care and care for the chronically ill. We will help prevent acute hospitalization, reduce hospital costs and decrease taxpayer burdens. Most importantly, we will care for the neglected and unseen members of our community who are hurting. We are happy to report that we opened our first clinic at Paradise Park in January of 2010. We have affiliation agreements with the major teaching institutions to serve as a community outreach and teaching center for our students. It is our goal to connect young professionals to their community and inspire them to serve and to remain in our community. We currently have agreements with College of Southern Nevada, Nevada State College University of Nevada Las Vegas, University of Nevada School of Nursing, University of Southern Nevada, and University of Touro. We have the support of local organizations for diagnostic tests, such as labs and x-rays from Quest, West Valley Imaging, and St Rose Hospital, and Desert Springs. We are working with national pharmaceutical companies to provide medications for our patients. Most of the medications are obtained through patient assistant programs known as PAP. Some of our local pharmacists run our medical dispensary with the help of pharmacy students from USN. Currently, the services we provide are: adult and pediatric primary care, women's care, new born checkups and immunizations, basic diagnostic tests and medications.
