West Geauga Local Schools continues to provide a continuum of specialized services for our students with disabilities. Each year the needs of our students with Individualized Education Plans are reviewed and service delivery plans are developed with the assistance of our general and special education teaching staff. Approximately 12% of our student population is in need of some form of specialized instruction. These services may range from assistance in the general education classroom to resource room (small group) instruction in a specific academic skill area to intensive individualized curriculum or therapy. West Geauga Local Schools believes in the philosophy, as set forth in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, that all students should be educated in the least restrictive environment, (i.e. attending their local school and participating in the general education curriculum/environment as much as is appropriate for the student). Acting upon this philosophy, West Geauga provides, to the greatest extent possible, classes where general and special education teachers collaborate upon the curriculum and/or co-teach. Less than 1% of our student population attends programs in other districts due to their unique needs, which are beyond the scope of our existing district services. Additionally, the vast majority of our students with disabilities spend greater than 50% of their day in the general education environment. In order to provide such a comprehensive service delivery plan for our students, West Geauga Local Schools has increased staff as needed and offered a wide range of training opportunities to all staff. An advantage to having these specialized services within each building is the sharing of instructional strategies between special and general education to assist any student experiencing academic challenges.
