Requirements and Responsibilities

Patent Law Senior Manager manages the patent law function of an organization and supports and advises a team of patent attorneys. Implements policies and procedures to ensure an organization's inventions or trademarks are valid and protected. Being a Patent Law Senior Manager monitors and tracks a portfolio of new and existing patents. Reviews technical and legal descriptions of patents or trademarks to ensure claims are clearly defined and meet patent office requirements. Additionally, Patent Law Senior Manager oversees patent filings and communicates with regulatory examiners to resolve objections, amend claims, and ensure approval. Requires registration with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Requires a JD. May require admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to a director. The Patent Law Senior Manager typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Patent Law Senior Manager typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.
