Emergency Services Director directs the staff and programs of the emergency services unit. Develops and introduces approved standards and guidelines for emergency service programs.     Successful completion of a two-year traineeship leads to appointment as a Fire Protection Specialist 1, SG-18.

    General Public:
    Individuals who are currently 55b/c eligible AND meet the below qualifications. If interested in this position and applying using your 55b/c status, please provide a copy of your current 55b/c eligiblity letter.

    Either 1: three years of full-time, paid experience as a firefighter in a fire department, military fire department, or industrial fire brigade. Experience must have been obtained on or after January 1, 2005.
    Or
    2: six years of experience as a volunteer firefighter or firefighter trainer. Experience must be obtained on or after January 1, 2005.

    Non-Qualifying experience: Radio dispatch, administrative or bookkeeping duties.

    Duties Description
    Duties may include but are not limited to:
    • Develop course curriculum for assigned technical specialties (e.g., hazardous materials, weapons of mass destruction, vehicle extrication, firefighting, and emergency medical services).
    • Prepare lesson plans and create a variety of educational materials and teaching aids.
    • Evaluate technical training programs and recommend improvements.
    • Conduct life safety code and fire prevention inspections of facilities at various counties, municipalities, and civic organizations to determine compliance with applicable state laws and regulations.
    • Inspect and supervise the testing of alarm, sprinkler, emergency lighting and public address systems.
    • Review corrective plans and prepare reports on inspection findings.
    • Meet with facility representatives to discuss life safety code and fire prevention deficiencies.
    • Conduct follow-up inspections and evaluation to ensure compliance.
    • Develop or assist in developing building evacuation plans.
    • May review special event plans, observe special event setups and operation to ensure adequate exiting, and review emergency command and control procedures and equipment.
    • Provide on-site investigative assistance and staff support to local government emergency responders and officials.
    • Provide technical direction to develop emergency response plans and exercises with the State Emergency Management Office.
    • Prepare technical reports and other documents on findings for court proceedings and may testify as the State’s technical expert.
    • May act as the official State representative to coordinate State provided emergency services in the event of a regional or Statewide incident.
    • Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle.
    • Significant travel, approximately 60%, often overnight in an assigned geographic location is required.

    NOTE: Support of operations during times of emergency and disaster from State Emergency Operations Center (EOC), state field offices and/or local deployments may be required, which would result in a change and/or increase in working hours, locations and/or duties.
