Job Summary:
Under general direction of the Lab Director, the Sr. Histology Technologist is responsible for implementing the department’s mission and goals, by providing expert professional Histology services. The Sr. Histology Technologist has additional technical oversight in their department, which includes planning, competency, training, administrative and leadership activities specific to their area of responsibility. The Sr. Histology Technologist is assigned as the technical expert for questions or concerns with health care providers specific to clinical sections in Histology.
This position description represents the work performed by Sr. Histology Technologist assigned to specialty areas: The Sr. Histology Technologist assumes significant leadership responsibilities, providing daily direction to other staff regarding Histology workload and policies and procedures. The incumbent is responsible for resolving technical problems with health care providers and support staff. In addition, the incumbent maintains knowledge and is competent to work in all sections of the Histology Department. The Sr. Histology Technologist motivates,
coordinates, and supports staff to ensure quality, clinically relevant data is reported in a timely manner to assist the provider with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. They assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from histology’s established performance specifications and that patient results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. The Sr. Histology Technologist identifies and sets forth training and competency needs for new histology staff as well as on-going training and competency for existing Histologist. This position requires the ability to apply critical thinking and consistently provide evaluation beyond the symptoms of a situation to identify underlying issues and root causes and to formulate/propose potential solutions and provide guidance and support to the Histologist’s with this process. This position is also responsible for department development for continuous improvement to meet the changing needs of the community and organization. Multiple test requests, with different or the same priority, must be effectively organized by the individual in order to maximize diagnostic impact. A high degree of accuracy and reliability is required to ensure results that can assist in the timely diagnosis and treatment of patients. Duties
require interaction with clinical staff and physicians, i.e., explanation of test results or answering a variety of questions. This position ensures compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements pertaining to the processing of specimens and the performance of routine histology procedures. This complies with the CLIA standards listed as responsibilities under 42CFR493.1463 for high-complexity general supervisors. The Sr. Histology Technologist must be accessible to the testing personnel to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical
problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the Department Medical (Technical) Directors and the Sr. Histology Technologist. This position has additional technical and administrative responsibilities for the department to include off campus CAP Inspections and team member inspection training designed for experienced laboratory professionals participating on a CAP inspection team.
