  • About the Position

    Position Description

    The IT Operations Assistant Director is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of specified IT operations within the company. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong technology and process management experience and proven leadership abilities. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. The IT Operations Assistant Director plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth functioning of our IT infrastructure and the successful delivery of IT services across the organization. This role provides oversight of multiple teams among infrastructure, operations, DevOps, database administration, or desktop & application support domains.

     

    Key Responsibilities:

     

    Strategic Planning and Leadership:

    ·        Assist in the development and implementation of the IT operations strategy, aligning it with the company's overall business objectives.

    ·        Provide strategic guidance as a member of the IT leadership team, ensuring the effective execution of operational plans.

    ·        Collaborate with senior management and other stakeholders to align IT operations initiatives with business objectives and priorities.

    ·        Lead selection and implementation of new technologies, tools, strategies, and solutions to support the organization's current and future needs.

     

    IT Infrastructure Management:

    ·        Oversee the management, maintenance, and enhancement of the company's IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, storage, and private & public cloud computing environments.

    ·        Develop and implement IT policies, procedures, standards, and best practices to ensure security, reliability, scalability, and performance of IT systems and infrastructure.

    ·        Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry best practices to drive continuous improvement and innovation in IT infrastructure.

     

    Service Delivery and Support:

    ·        Define and implement IT service management processes and standards, including incident management, problem management, change management, and service level management.

    ·        Champion strategies such as DevSecOps and SAFe to drive high collaboration and throughput across multiple business and IT domains.

    ·        Monitor service performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and take proactive measures to enhance service delivery.

    ·        Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely resolution of IT-related issues and minimize downtime.

     

    Personnel Management and Development:

    ·        Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to IT Operations department staff, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

    ·        Provide guidance and support to team members, ensuring their professional growth and development.

    ·        Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the department, evaluating performance and driving improvement where necessary.

     

    Budgeting and Resource Management:

    ·        Contribute to the development and management the IT Operations budget, ensuring optimal utilization of resources and cost-effective delivery of services.

    ·        Identify and evaluate vendor relationships to ensure the selection of reliable and cost-effective IT solutions and services.

     

    Compliance and Risk Management:

    ·        Ensures that UNOS is compliant with applicable information security regulations and contract requirements, such as HIPAA privacy rules, NIST requirements and the OPTN contract.

    ·        Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements, industry standards, and internal policies.

    ·        Identify and mitigate IT-related risks, implementing appropriate controls and security measures.

    ·        In coordination with the Information Security department, stay abreast of cybersecurity threats and trends, implementing robust measures to protect the company's IT assets and data.

     

    Government and Community Engagement:

    ·        Act as a key point of contact for all communications related to IT operations with internal staff, government agencies, and third parties, e.g., member institutions of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), technology service providers, etc.

    ·        Provide input and influence in the transplant community by promoting UNOS and technology best practices.

    ·        Influence the development of standards and best practices for the exchange of transplant data between UNOS and external entities.

    ·        Recruit and develop the IT Operations department so that the organization is seen as a leader in the Richmond technology community as well as the transplant community.  Promote UNOS and technology best practices through local networks such as rvatech and national transplant associations such as the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO).

     

    Minimum Requirements

    • 10 years of experience within IT Operations or related field.
    • 5 years of people management experience; 7-10 years preferred.

     

    Critical Skills

    • Proven experience in a senior leadership role within IT operations.
    • Strong technical background with in-depth knowledge of IT infrastructure, systems, and applications.
    • Experience establishing and operating within IT management frameworks such as ITIL, Site Reliability Engineering, DevSecOps, SAFe, etc.

    Education

    4-year degree in computer science, information technology, or related field of study, or equivalent level of professional work experience.  Advanced degree preferred.
